suggestions: neo-classical soundmass?
I am looking for more composers that would be classified as "Experimental Classical" or "Soundmass." I have only heard Krzysztof Penerecki, and Toru Takimitsu, but I really enjoy their works. I really would like to find more composers that would be similar. If anyone could help me, I would really appriciate that.

Neo-classical experimental? Soundmass?
Is that a euphemism for when the entire orchestra goes "bleep-bloop-bleep?"
Look for orchestral works by:
Edgar Varese...first and foremost
Ligeti (Check out the orchestral stuff, then go out and get "Mechanical Music" on Sony. So damn awesome)
Xenakis
Earle Brown
George Perle
John Cage
Stockhausen
"The Iron Foundry" by Mosolov

Hans Werner Henze's symphonies often have "Soundmass" qualities.
Mahler's Sixth Symphony (this has nothing to do with this thread, but if you don't have it already you'd better run out and get Georg Szell's version on Sony...it's, like, seven bucks or something). There's Beethoven's sixth, then there's Mahler's sixth (Webern).

Schoenberg / Webern / Berg
Orchestral works.
It's nice to go through a little Wozzeck phase once a year or so.
I like to watch the movie by Herzog, then watch the opera on DVD (Abbado's production), then listen to one of my CD versions with the score. Then I go shoot myself out in a field. Good times. Guess why I'm single now!

Elektra by Richard Strauss (60s recording by Solti). Even if you don't like opera, this one should still rip your face off (and piss your neighbors off, too).
Suprisingly "Modern."

I will listen and love all of it. I'm glad to see all of these new names.. I know it's hard enough to even find toru takimitsu, and all of those guys (keep in mind I usually buy cds or records.. I don't usually download too much.. however, it seems as if I am going to have to with all of these names). But thank you all for pointing out all of that excellent "soundmass."

Even better, don't assume anything, especially about Satchmo.
