I'm not a 'fan', but I like Brubeck all right. As has been said, Desmond and Morello really take things over the top, but that's not to slight Brubeck himself. I like his blocky style. He takes it places and it works well as a counter point to the flexible currents running around him in this quartet context. I recently got a copy of - 'Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall' (1963) - and I am enjoying the music. There is plenty for me to sink my teeth into. Swinging and cerebral - and fun. You don't have to be among the cognoscente to get on board and appreciate this music, yet it offers the experienced jazz fan a nice trip, too.

Beyond this classic quartet, my invovement with Brubeck pretty much ends. I have heard some nice stuff from Brubeck recorded on the Concord lable ('Iola' & 'Reflections'). I don't go out of my way to listen to his later stuff, but when I hear it it is usually a solid listening experience.

10 Satchmo points, for busting out with "cognoscente" in a post.

P.S. The Carnegie Hall recording is good, as well.

Time Out is still something I listen to from time to time...partly because I think the songs themselves are solid, and partly because it was one of only 3 acoustic jazz albums I had in my "collection," a reference I actually used in the late 80's/early 90's The others were the Chick Corea Akoustic Band (s/t) and Kind of Blue. I remember thinking that when I wanted to listen to acoustic jazz, I had more than enough with these three albums

Brubeck was not Bill Evans, and Wright will never be compared to Charlie Hayden or Ron Carter. But the album is something special nonetheless. The fact that "Take Five" was a top hit may bethe best indicator of where the appeal of this album really lies. That's not all bad; in fact, I don't think that's bad at all. Now I got "Pick Up Sticks" in my head...might be time to give it a spin...

Paul Desmond on discussing why didn't want to be a leader:

"You could end up on the road with two junkies and a guy who couldn't play."
