I see. I guess not a linguist extraordinaire.

Maybe it seems easier for me because I finger pick. Finger picking really hauls some ass, my friend, you should try it some day. I actually find it more versatile than picking normally, though I do keep my trusty thumbpick around for hotshit chromatic scales.

on a scale of 1-10, id say 4. the step to 5 is pretty long though. lots of stuff i dont master. ive been playing on and off for about 3 years, and 2 years ago i decided to put some energy into it. i play in a band, i guess you could say we play fast punk, so i know how to play fast, but im no good at say, playing funk, as stated before in this thread.

unlike the ratt, i couldnt play black dog after a month of playing. i guess im not rishijin material

i remember looking into black dog within the first few months of playing too. it all depends on what you start with. the first tune i really learned was 'suck my kiss' by the red hot chili peppers. by learning that single note funky riff it made it easier to adapt to the BD riff when i tried it.

how long one has played the instrument is a much weaker measure of skill or talent than how long one has spent learning to play the instrument.

it reminds me of this guy i knew in college, he'd played for years, he could play EVH's 'eruption' on his acoustic but when it came to playing anything else he was clueless. he'd ask me to show him simple nirvana tunes and i'd recite the chords, G, C, D (or whatever it was) and he had no idea how to play them. but anytime anyone heard the two of us play he got all the praise because people would piss themselves on 'eruption'. nevermind that he was playing by rote and not by knowledge of the instrument.

I'm fine with chording, too, but I'm self-taught, so I don't know a lot of theory. This makes playing stuff like suspended (insert number I don't understand yet here) chords difficult.

so long as you know how to play the major and most of the minor chords and understand the barre chord theory you don't 'really' need to know the rest
