ableton live

i've recently moved into a new place with my old lady and i'm making a vow to start doing some more music work. i'm using the girlfriend as my muse. i've produced previous tracks using a regular old software sequencer and a handfull of synths i have lying around. i usually mix down the tracks with little effort (thus they sound kinda...plain).

this is the only way i've ever made music.

i just downloaded the ableton live demo and went through it's tutorials. HOLY CRAP.

does anyone here have any experience with this fine piece of software? it makes some really mundane and tedious tasks in electronic music production easier.

i just want to make sure that i'm making the right decision before i throw down 500 bux.

ive only used the demo aswell, but yeah, holy crap.

Ive heard that you cant really beat it, its up there with Logic in terms of power and its just as easy as say Reason 2.5. I really like the interface, too.

There used to be a member here called Papa Magotchi that used it. He started from having zero electronica/production knowledge, but progressed pretty quickly. I have no idea how much of that was Ableton's fault, but maybe thats a little bit of an indication.

btw, I dont think you can go wrong with Ableton Live if you are really going to get back into production.

music :
The Glass Tax
I use it for gigs.

On someones sugestion I tried it for a full host program but I didn't like it, it wasn't very me as it was too loop based for actual music creation for my liking.

ableton works by setting up "clips" on each track and then triggering them bar by bar. if you check out this, you'll get somewhat of an idea i think:

notice the tracks and each of their clips.

they loop in time to the song and live synchs everything together to flow properly. i guess that this is the most generic way i could explain it.

but i think once you get past what keef is saying, you can start to keep your loops from sounding too "loopy" using all kinds of automation with audio and midi effects to break the monotony.

i do understand what keef is saying though, it definately has a loop based backbone and i've thought of this as well...
