What's with all the John Cale love? Self-titled and loaded were still excellent albums, showing off some classic lou reed song craft.

anyways...
Stones - Richards or Jagger
Police - Sting

Jimi Hendrix Experience/Band of Gypsies - Jimi Hendrix = Not crap, they were all good musicians, but it sure as shit wouldn't be nearly as good.

The Doors - Jim Morrison = Crap (although, then again, I did hear that the "Doors of the 21st Century" thing was pretty cool)

I don't listen to them, but... Nine Inch Nails - Trent Reznor = Crap.

Jethro Tull - Ian Anderson = Crap.

There are more.

The first two are I figured are obvious. The third makes no real sense, since Reznor is NIN.

I stopped paying attention to Tull and Anderson a long time ago. Did he ever leave the band and the others continued with a new singer?

I think many people missed the point of this thread. For example, The Police didn't continue without Sting. Mick and Keith never left the Stones and the others never continued as the Stones without Mick and Keith.

Exactly. It's no point in mentioning hypothetical break ups since there's endless possibilities. I was just looking for bands that actually split up and weren't as good afterwards.

That should be Bloodbath - Mikael Akerfeldt.
Of those, Edge of Sanity is only the valid one, where the band got screwed due to internal disputes. Also it seems that Swano is almost burnt out of great ideas. He posts at the UM forums and said something to the extent of 'i don't have it in me to make another Moontower'.
I'm a little confused by your responses. The thread is Band - Vital Member = Crappy Band. All of those bands I listed without Dan Swano would have been nothing.

Yeah, I follow the thread on UM sometimes, and he seems confident he couldn't make another moontower. Doesn't really bother me though... most musicians have a peak and go downhill from there.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread the topic. I was using hypothetical breakups... sorry.

The Clash - Mick Jones = crap (ironically)
Guns N' Roses - pretty much everyone but Axl = crap*
INXS - Michael Hutchence = unconsionable crap
R.E.M. - Bill Berry = crap**

*might be too early to say for sure (but im pretty sure).
** "crap" is probably a little harsh, but theyve be on a steady decline since losing their drummer.
