Maybe that is the case these days, but it wasn't always that way. Now, you have Britney, J-Low , MTV, etc... back in Satchmo's days you had Beatles, Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Clash, and other similar hacks of musical history.

No idea what was around at the time, but I think I was heading out of my Level 42/Pet Shop Boys phaze, and heading into thrash and death metal. Used to listen to John Peel's show to see if Bolt Thrower or Napalm Death were being played.

Probably started getting into Bauhaus and Fields of the Nephilim around that time too.
