Metal seems to me, to be the most difficult music to play out there. Therefor, it takes more TALENT to create. I think pop has no talent, rap has no talent, hop-hop has no talent... those are all people who hardly do ANYTHING to make their careers work out. They just remember some lyrics and sing to them. Metal bands have to CREATE songs for every instrument in the band, practice their asses off, perfect the hardest riffs around, make sure everyone in the band is up to par and then have the courage to perform such a difficult piece. Anyone who says metal has no talent is out of their blind-to-begin-with minds.

sorry... i disagree on that one... metal is NOT the toughest or hardest musical style to compose... then again it depends on the composer rather than the style... most metal songs only have a few main parts that are usually played the same way over and over when it's their turn... and while the parts seem difficult to play for the people who aren't into playing that style... give it a year or two and things start to seem a lot simpler...

i'd call jazz the most complex of contemporary music styles...

I've been listening to metal for years. It's still not looking very simple.
I guess, though, any type of music should be difficult to compose. I still have my opinions on Rap, Hip-Hop and Pop, But I think I'll keep that out of the metal forum.

sorry i didn't mean listening... i was talking about actually playing the style... and yes practice does make anything seem simpler... but aside from the TROO norwegian death metal or crazy super prog metal... most of it has the same basic elements...

Yes, indeed. When I think of "real/true" metal I automatically think of the true norwegian style, since with my close friends, that's the style that surrounds me. I agree that metal birthed in the states or that is commonly referred to has gotten a bit basic.

Metal as a genre, is not easy to play, and there is alot of talent there. As for alot of the metal bands sounding alike, yes it's true, but that goes for any particular style of music. The Dillinger Escape Plan puts metal in a blender, and I challange anyone to find a band that's more complex and innovative. Go buy their album Calculating Infinity(Relapse Records), and after the first 30 seconds, you'll be cleaning your bathroom with your old metal band shirts, as they will just be rags to you now. The drummer Chris Pennie is the best metal dummer of all time, and he's still young, so anyone that's had a career as a metal dummer will be put into retirement. Please listen to them and then you'll see the light!
Cheers!
