ive heard a few songs (dripping dream, unmade bed, pattern recognition) and I think they are okay, well i especially like unmade bed, so soothing, its one of my favourite SY songs. The other two are average

yes that is what I meant.
I think my teacher was playing us the 20th century one (4th one?) and I was interested in the series and allmusic.com didn't have very much useful info.
I have most of their "albums"
my favorites being
washing machine
a thousand leaves
daydream nation

sonic youth is an odd band for me, because daydream nation is one of my all time favorite albums, and probably one of my top 5 rock albums.
but i've listened to many of their other albums, and i've always been disappointed. sister was ok (i love the first song, and a few others) but not spectacular. dirty, sonic nurse, goo, washing machine, experimental jet set... i thought those were pretty mediocre.
i'll have to check out evol though

Yeah, before I really got into sonic youth, I just kind of liked them. I used to often say that sonic youth was a hard band to get into. Because there is a mountain of -just alright- sonic youth songs, and then a handful of truly amazing sonic youth songs. Which is why I also like daydream nation (practically every song being great)... even though it doesn't seem to be a popular pick on this forum.
Evol is a great album... my favorite songs would include tom violence, shadow of a doubt, green light, and secret girls. However, I could have done without the track bubblegum...
As far as those albums that you listed... I pretty much agree with you... I haven't heard sonic nurse because there isn't much sonic youth in these days that I care for. However, experimental jet set wasn't great in my opinion. I hated dirty... and washing machine took me a long while to get into. Like the diamond sea is a great song. Goo was decent (even though all of the albums have at least one or two songs that, when put together would make a great compliation). However, as far as sonic youth in the 90s. I was really surprised with 'a thousand leaves.' I would definitely suggest at least one listen, because in my opinion, it's really good. I really enjoyed sister... considering it's probably the closest thing to daydream nation that they have ever made (even though I believe sister was made right before daydream nation). Evol is definitely a must get for anyone whom is at all compelled to checkout sonic youth.

yeah I'm hearing 'a thousand leaves' right now
But I have to say Washing Machine is what reall got me into them, from the very first second of the album. I just love the timbre on that album (especially the guitar sounds). I love daydream nation, but it sounds bland to me compared to 'Washing Machine' and 'a thousand leaves'

For anyone who cares about the SYR's they aren't for everyone, but they are intresting nevertheless. If you do decide to get any of the SYR's, get 'em on vinyl! Their colored, which is always a plus, atleast for me anyway.
And I agree EVOL is a rad record, as is Bad Moon Rising.
