As to your "Zeppelin clone" comment...that may indeed be your opinion of what they started out as but I see and hear no common 'sound' among the two bands particularly when focusing on their earliest releases which should sound similar among 'clones'.
-The guitar in Rush hasn't got the 'blues' that Zeppelin obviously does.
-The drumming, although difficult to replicate in each of the bands sounds not only different (partly due to the production) but also has a completely different feel...Bonham more of a groove and Peart more mechanically precise.
-The singing has little to no common ground at all aside from high register. Plant screamed a lot with a gravelly rasp and delivered many lyrics in an almost psychedelic way (particularly live) whereas Geddy Lee delivered his vocals in a much more deliberate fashion 'singing' pretty much every note that he produced. Essentially, Plant had a lot of vocal range and sounds like he does it by feel while Lee sounds more schooled and precise (deliberate) even if many find his tone to be annoying.

...to your credit...you did say "quickly changed course"...was that after 10 seconds in the studio?

Have you even heard their first two records? I hate to tell you this, but it's the vast majorities opinion including the members of Rush, that they were early on a Zeppelin clone. They were even a Cream and Zeppelin cover band, before they were signed.

Being the Rush "wannabe" expert, I am sure you know Peart wasn't even in the group for the first record. It would take 2 records before they really moved on. But hey, if you think you know better than everyone else, including Rush, what do hell do I care.

I also don't need you informing me, what is to my credit or not, as if, I cared one way or another what you thought. That you agree with me or not is of no importance.

The number one reason I hate most of Peart's lyrics is that they are influenced by Ayn Rand, the queen of turning a simple sentence into a long diatribe...I am with the police chief on South Park who swore he'd "never read again" after reading Atlas Shrugged (hey, at least he didn't have to read The Fountainhead, which was even worse)

I have to agree, that the Rand influence leaves a bad taste; however, it was Rush's music that interested me and not their lyrics.

Very true. Being a bassist especially, I am very much able to appreciate the talents of both Lee and Peart. I guess in the end, Rush was a band I really "wanted" to like more than I did. Still, I did have a much higher tolerance for them until the summer in which my brother owned exactly two 90 minute cassettes: One was a Police The Singles/Ghost in the Machine, the other 90 munites of assorted Rush. As I was a huge Police fan before that disaster, I've fully healed from the Police (although Ghost is and was my least favorite), but never, ever did I recover from Rush.

If you find someone with only ONE philosophy book, it will ALWAYS be Atlas Shrugged. God knows why. Knowledge h8ers.

Hey, don't knock Atlas Shrugged. I have it somewhere in my basement wedged between a pile of nudie magazines and back-issues of Guitar World that I don't give two shits about, but might when I'm 40 and have nothing to do.

That's because they usually first read the book as teenagers. Many teenagers are usually attracted to Rand's narcissistic "philosophy".

I'll repeat that I never said anything about "prog"...aside from asking for the list...I said that I think what Rush did was and is impressive.

At any rate, thanks for the list. I'm sure that I'll find something interesting there.
