The Guitar Thread

I just wanted to start a thread that was all about guitars....since guitar is my life and I really don't much like talking about sshhhhtuff that has nothing to do with it.

So, to start off....who here plays guitar!? Also, what got you into guitar and what is your ultimate guitar playing goal? I'll post mine after a few replies so that it doesn't clog up this very important first post.

This should probably be moved to the instrumental forum, but that's beside the point...

I play guitar. I'm not incredibly serious about it, but i'm not bad. I have an Ibanez Artwood acoutsic/electric and some cheapo Yamaha acoustic.

As far as my goals in playing, I don't care much about running through scales at the speed of light or anything like that, I'd just like to be able to play decent accompaniment to anything. I'm also working at learning new and varied figer picking styles.

Of course I hardly ever practice anything new so it's slow going...

As far as I can tell, the instruments forum is all but dead, that is why I would not wish to have my thread there. The fact that I didn't even know it was part of Radio Mute should be evidence enough that I made the right choice.

I used to play guitar. I had a beautiful black Fender acoustic with a pick-up. Nice deep, train sound, perfect for the Blues - which was what I played most. Bottleneck slide was always fun, especially when playing Elmore James, though the first slide tune I learned was Zep's version of 'Travelling Riverside Blues'. I never learned anything extremely technical - mostly Bo Diddley and Bo Diddley-esque shuffle blues - but, man, I had fun. I wasn't playing much, and my guitar was too cool to be left collecting dust. I sold it a few months ago.

I've been learning for about 2 years now and my progress is extremely slow. I could technically play a few things but never really developed the discipline to play a song all the way through and because of that i'm still pretty bad.

I recently ordered a new guitar which haven't arrived yet. It was a simon and patrick and cost an arm and a leg. Better be worth it when it arrives

I started playing guitar about a year ago. My first guitar was an Ibanez Ex Series, it's pretty much a piece of shit but I got it for free so I can't complain hehehe. After awhile I got an acoustic, it's a Carlo Robelli, a Sam Ash (the store I bought it at) brand guitar. Neither of them are anything special, but there's nothing wrong with the way they sound. They'll do fine until I can afford something better, but I'm not interested in purchasing anything new until I'm able to play a bit better.

I decided to take lessons for guitar, because I had tried to teach myself an instrument in the past and I really can't do it, it's harder for me to commit. My guitar teacher hasn't really been teaching me any songs I'm particularly interested in playing, so I took the liberty to look up tabs for the songs I do want to play, or just listening to them and guessing. What's alot of fun is downtuning my guitar waaaaaaay down and turning all the gain on my amp on, bass all the way up, treble all the way down, and playing along to Sunn O))) cds. It's funny to come in every week and wasting a few minutes of the lesson tuning my guitar. I didn't tell my teacher that I was messign around with alternate tuning, he thought there was something wrong with my guitar until he guessed it .

I guess I wanted to start playing guitar because most of the music I listen to (or did at the time, I'm not so sure anymore) used the guitar.

As far as my goals go...I want to be able to change chords more accurately with speed, I don't practice chord changes enough. I'm pretty good with more technical stuff though. One song I'd really like to learn is Say Hello to the Angels by Interpol.

it's all but dead until a thread pops up then all the guitar players come out of the woodwork for a few days. (so i'll be moving it to the stringed instruments after i post this)

i got into guitar after i heard the red hot chili peppers for the first time. the song was 'jungle man'. it was the coolest thing i had ever heard up until that point. as awesome as the bass was it was the guitar that really grabbed me.

as for my guitars the first one i had was a strat copy called a jaguar. at the moment i have 4 electrics (2 no names / epiphone special II / mexican fender stratocaster) 2 basses (samick 5 string fretless / aria pro II) and an acoustic (yamaha woman's model).

my main goal on the guitar is to learn 'song for the dead' by the queens of the stone age. i'll start working on it more seriously once i get my amp fixed or get my hands on a peavey rage for under $100. i also need to replace the tuning pegs and restring one of my guitars first too.
