hippies were a threat to the establishment and look how many of those people died from drugs liquor and selfdestruction.. hendrix and jopplin are two that come to mind.. all the protesters that were shot by police at that school in the states. does this mean that they were a big influence on punk? i believe that punks are a modernized badass hippie.
fact of the matter here is that the punk lifestyle and views arent anything new. theres always been the underdog that questions authority like bob dyllan, dies of drugs like elvis, and redirects the sound of music like wagner or that guy who first played the blues. but just because the sex pistols helped to change the look and sound of rebellion and freedom doesnt mean that they are the biggest influence. id rather not put all the credit on one punk band. YES they did help, and YES they were a big chunk of the movement... but you have to give equal credit to other bands like the misfits, ramones, dead kens, black flag and others i cant think of so early in the morning.
i hope you understand that i agree with the fact that the sex pistols were a big influence. i just simply do not think they were big enough or early enough to deserve all the credit for forming the punk movement.

I think a lot of you are overrating the sex pistols. So many punk bands had so much more to them than the sex pistols. In terms of music, putting their lives on the line, making people question things and threatening the establishment.
I really can't take the sex pistols all that seriously they were just too manufactured. They were the first punk band that I got into, it was in about 1985 and I was really into them for about a year. After that I really couldn't get all that much from their music. They did open up doors to other bands though.

Spoken perfectly like someone that doesn't really have a clue about punk rock, well done.

The Pistols are everything I hate about punk. Horrible music with a hey we're different right behind it pushing it along the way.

You can say this about a great many that posted in this and the Green Day thread.

No. It's great music too, even if Sid couldn't play bass.
Image and good music can be complementary qualities.
