I don't really see what is so special about The Sex Pistols. Their music is dcent at best (I don't consider my self a fan but the music is not horrible) in my opinion. The Sex Pistols also bother me because of the importance they have for the 'tragedy' that surrounded Sid Vicious. I doubt The Sex Pistols would be viewed in such a way (maybe to a lesser degree at least) if it hadn't been for Sid's lifestyle and death. Like dblecros said, the history they made is irrelevant.
Also, as stated already they did spawn a great deal of imitators that shame the very culture they claim to love so much.
I don't like the music The Sex Pistols made, but I really can't stand them at all because of the people I know who do like them. All the people my age I know who intentionally make their hair look messy, shop for spikey bracelets and baggy pants with all sorts of chains or whatever hanging off of them, try to sound like they are stoned when they talk, and live in my 94% white (a fact) suburban New York town full of golf courses who don't appreciate what they have (because they are all rich bastards) so they can claim to be punks, listen to them.
If you want a band that hated everything camilojoe, listen to Crucifix.
and uh...DEAD KENNEDYS WERE ANYTHING BUT A FUCKING FOOTNOTE! DK are one of the most influential and unique punk bands to have ever existed, and I don't say that because of any "legacy" they might have had. This part of my post is a fact, not opinion.
This is opinion again - The following bands beat the crap out of The Sex Pistols:
Crass
Dead Kennedys
Black Flag
The Stooges
The Ramones
Stiff Little Fingers
The Misfits
Wire
Suicide
Husker Du

Well if you haven't noticed the sex pistols were the inspiration for most of those bands. Yeah they found out that the sex pistols were full of crap but still they inspired them. for an example crass, crass was inspired by them and they are known for starting crust. Without the sex pistols we would not have/had many great bands as we did. the sex pistols were an essential part to the growth of punk. Do I personally listen to the sex pistols, no but in respect them for what they have done in the sense that they helped punk on its way.

I think The Sex Pistol's influence on those bands is debatable...Even if The Sex Pistols had an influence over some of the bands I mentioned, they are still not even close to being the best punk band. Besides, I said they beat the crap out of them, I didn't say they were closer to being the best punk bands ever hehehe .

i think that you guys havent listened to 'never mind...' since junior high, and just write it off as four clotheshorses coughing out by-the-numbers mid-tempo rockers. i mean, the sex pistols' mission statement on that record is seriously offensive. they displayed untmost contempt for the government, but just as much for their audience. every band since calling itself punk has never really been punk, they've just been punk rock.
when, in their entire existence, did the dead kennedys commit anything close to the audacity on 'never mind...'? the kennedys had the luxury of being a punk band AFTER the sex pistols, after a nucleus of kids had already jumped into leather, so it didnt matter how loud they bellowed 'fuck authority.' they were doing it after the fact, so where was the risk? other bands have been more musically adept, but none have set such an attractive example as the sex pistols. any time a band that sloganeered against thatcher, reagan, bush, or whoever, what they really saying was 'we wish we were the sex pistols.'
sid vicious did very little for the sex pistols. he clearly did not play a note on the album, nor on the US tour. but if the accusation inveighed against the sex pistols is their infatuation with image, then look past their image! ignore their manager, sid vicious, their weak-ass comeback shows; the music alone is head and shoulders above anything before or immediately afterwards. where was rock before the sex pistols? i mean, here is a band that seriously deserves grandiose proclamations of that sort. nobody before or since articulates like JR, and jones and cook were like this lockstep machinegun duo that sounded more like a lawnmower than a rock section, which for its time is pretty inconceivable. sure, since their album there have been bands who have been louder, faster, smarter, stupider, more violent, more DIY, but none have been willing to break rules like the sex pistols. this makes them the best punk band.

Ha! Ha! Oh dear if I'd realised I was in discussion with such a muddled buffoon I wouldn't have wasted time. It doesn't matter whether you like the Sex Pistol's! it doesn't matter who is 'best'! You have the mindset of everything the Sex Pistols detested you silly little man, and the Pistols loved more than they hated, they were a band with high morals and strict principals and they were nothing short of a cultural revolution, do you understand that? If you think that is irrelevant then make your own with your "my fave bands are better than yours" flag flying high!!!! Good luck Maaaan!

Truth is the truth my friend nothing to do with being upset and as for 'ignorant' you can only explain that one, I've forgot'n more than most people know, certainty of mind is a strength. Ignorance? many round here are showing it in spades.

well you're certainly full of yourself.
how about we give credit where credit is due. Malcolm McLaren. HE was the punk and the pistols were HIS puppets. i suppose iggy and the stooges or the MC5 didn't really have dick to offer in his idea on how to change pop music. Frank Zappa's endless barrage on the mainstream probably didn't factor for shit either before that summer of '75 either right?

Hmmm, you made a thread about how you hate corporate punks, yet here, you seem to be defending them.
