My favourites are...
Calexico : almost everything, including the jamming live tour cds are great. Check out songs like Crystal Frontier, Gilbert, Quattro, Scout ....
Lisa Germano : quirky alt. singer with very nice lyrics. Happiness is my fav. album by her, but anything else is good too.
The Decemberists : amazing lyrics, very accessible songs. Similar to Neutral Milk Hotel(which is another amazing band, btw)
I could list another couple of indie bands but they wouldn't be as much like as the above 3(and after all you want to 'stretch your horizons' so I'm going with,
Refused : my favourite punk band. Check out the track New Noise
Opeth : my favourite band ever . Check out the song Still Day Beneath the Sun, and then The Moor.
Other great bands; Anathema, Katatonia.

Depends on what Indie is I guess...Indie rock? or just bands on Indie labels? anyhoo...
Mogwai: haunting melodies, huge swings from quiet and tranquil to loud and aggressive. 'Come On Die Young' has to be one of the most amazing pieces of art i've ever had the privilidge to experience.
The Shins: lyrically one of the best bands of all time and i quote, "After all these implements and text designed by intellects so vexed to find evidently there's just so much that hides. And though the saints dub us divine in ancient fading lines their sentiment is just as hard to pluck from the vine." (song: Saint Simon, album: Chutes Too Narrow)
The Beta Band: i heard Johnny Marr say they were the most interesting band he'd heard in years or something to that effect, a few years back. a funky mix of samples, obvious drug induced lyrical poetics, and simple kick-ass melodies.
Pinback: just simply amazing. a straight forward pop band that writes pop songs that can either break your heart (Tres), make you smile (Loro), or let you just rock out (Non Photo-Blue).
and for number five i'll just list...Three Mile Pilot, the Black Heart Procession, Death Cab for Cutie, British Sea Power, Unwound, Trans Am, the Lemonheads (Dando started out Indie...), Fugazi, and Spoon.

A truly remarkable band. Aside from their great lyrics, their melodies are truly out of this world.

I had a huge obsession with the Shins but once their novelty wore off I found that their songs make me want to die. And not because they are so tragic, they just got tragically annoying.
That said. At this very moment my top five... err... six...
The Six Parts Seven - Quite Mogwai-like. I saw them live with M83 and it was great, how can something so loud be so peaceful?
The Go! Team - It's like chasing down a furry crocodile while you're riding a tricycle with Betty Boop. When they make a reality show about my life, The Go! Team will be always be playing in the background.
The Necks - Great Soundtracks, Long songs, slow repeats... The Red House Painters are good for this too.
My Bloody Valentine - I had heard the Lost in Translation soundtrack, but just discovered their full album. Incredible. So many immitators...
Pinback - The bassist is great, he plays a guitarists roll and it just sounds upside down. Incredible.
The Fiery Furnaces - Very Operatic... It's like a story, but weirder.

I am a huge fan of The Fiery Furnaces. They are a very different sounding band than most of what everyone is used to hearing. Their album from last year, The Blueberry Boad, is like a strange off broadway musical. Very artsy, but very good.
