In the end, what we have are these little, great moments. They come and they go. That's as good as it gets. But, still, isn't that great?

apostle of hustle is great. they're australlian avant-garde, mostly instrumental. listen to folkloric feel: it's long but easy to like.
belle orchestre is great, too. they're an instrumental band from montreal that toured with arcade fire when they were first getting big. as the name suggests, they are an orchestra, but they're still quite easy to like.
the most serene republic is great, too. I heard someone describe them as an emo broken social scene, but that is a very bad description. they aren't emo at all, although they do sound a lot like broken social scene. I think some of their members might be in bss, actually.
the unicorns are hilarious, and if you like really weird indie pop, it's hard to not like them. it's hard to not like them either way.
they broke up a while ago, upon finding out that unicorns weren't real, and some of the band members went off to form the band islands. I saw them at the cd release party for their album, and they carry on the unicorns' tradition of blending a lot of different musical elements into one sound, and being funny while doing it.

The unicorns are really great. Besides the old warhorses like Pavement,Built to Spill, etc., the indie bands that I'm really into NOW are Belle and Sebastian, the Decemberists, THE WEAKERTHANS, and a pretty unknown band called Shinobu that's REALLY fucking awesome.

Yes, now here's some recent ones for ya:
Kaizers Orchestra - The greatest. Ompa till du dör! Also like that Janove ottesen solo record, although he's music is completely different comparing to the Kaizers orchestra.
Then some that don't even compete in the same league with the kaizers:
Mirah - Found this one yesterday. Quite a nice singing voice, she's been compared to CocoRosie somwhere, i dunno. Enjoyable nevertheless, nothin earthbreaking though.
Patrick Wolf - This Irish singer/songwriter fellow definitely has something unique going on, that's for sure. I really dig the Wind in the wires album and the song called To the Lighthouse. Also, I am about to read this book called To the lighthouse by Virginia Woolf.
Jens Lekman - Oh, you're so silent, Jens is definitely worth listening, also the only thing I've heard. Great voice, good songs. Pocketful of Money prolly my fav at the moment. hmm...see my av.
Explosions In the Sky - Here's a recent discovery. Some very powerful songs. Not such a fav actually but I really dig them nevertheless.
Phish - The Story of the ghost, very nice.
Modest Mouse - A long time favourite. Have been listening to them today after a long break. Still like them.

Simeon, allthough i love Kaizers too,,, i sure wouldn´t call them indie. Alternative of course, but not indie i think. Sure that depends on what you mean by indie,, but most people i know (me included) defines it as music like Franz Ferdinand and Belle & Sebastian,, and maybe kent aswell. Then maybe youd say "Indie is simply music given out on the bands own eh,, whats the word,, well, "music company thingy"",, but i think its a music style.
My favorit indie bands would be,, well, those mentioned, kent, Franz Ferdinand and Belle & Sebastian,,,
If you absolutely want to count Kaizers as indie,, edit this post and put them next to kent as the greatest

Mirah is great, but not like CocoRosie, much nicer, meaning that there aren't a lot of "disturbing" sounds in her eh sound, ifyaknowwhatahmean. She's related to the Microphones, but I haven't listened much to them (him) myself.
I like the others you listed, except for Modest Mouse who I hate and Phish. Haven't listened to the latter, but I don't think they're my cup of tea.
I agree that Kaizers Orchestra isn't really indie, Nem, as they're too much rock'n'roll... But I don't really understand your definition apart from that
I have been listening quite a bit to Great Lake Swimmers, an indie/alt.country-ish outfit. The guy's got a great voice. And also The Jim Yoshii Pile-up who move somewhere between the style of Great Lake Swimmers, say Bright Eyes as well as Sonic Youth, Slint. something like that, but then not quite.
The Chalets, quirky Irish rock band, I don't like all their songs as much, but "Two Chord Song" is brilliant. Great female/male vocals mix.
