My rating is a 3 out of 5. They tried way too hard on this album and it shows. It feels more like they're trying to please as many people as possible rather than pleasing themselves. I think this is Coldplay's Absolution and I hope they figure out that less is more.

i like that comparison. i'm gonna be generous and give it 4/5, it's slowly growing on me, it's not ground-breaking but it's charming and uplifiting and you can't really ask for much more from what is, essentially, pop music.

Here's my review:

Coldplay in light of pressure from EMI ie a blunt memo to said band that unless they pull out the lazy echo ridden histrionic bed wetting pedal board and get down to completing another tired & tested collection of dribbling & yet so soaring experience for couples who feel a sense of unease as they (quite rightly) suspect that they are just going thru the motions.

But still as they unwrap their new Coldplay CD along with their mild cheese, low fat carbo counted ready meal and fruity red from the local Tesco metro they feel they are in tune with others just like themselves and that instills a modicum of comfort in a world which seems utterly deathly.

Their six month old son however has a well defined and crystal clear sense of fun (remember that?) & duly places his foot slowly onto the CD cover enjoying the thrilling crack & splinter as the plastic tray gives way to the force of this bounding youth.

Nice summation of Coldplay, but I would add that they are more a poster child for what's happening in mainstream music, especially in the rapidly fading "alt rock" or "adult album alternative". The whole of their scene has turned into a diet soft drink. It's not necessarily their fault that in this day and age, there is actually an audience for something like this. Sara McLachlan never looked so cutting edge.

What's notable about your "couples going through the motions" bit, though, is that A Rush of Blood to the Head was actually the soundtrack to two divorces that have happened in the last couple of years to friends of mine. A third, incidentally, took place to the tune of Radiohead's Kid A.

It doesn't surprise. Music to drift apart to, now there is a dismal concept! And they look so smug about it. The band that is, they should be ashamed of the misery they cause. U gotta laff!

It 's the bands that followed in their wake that really fill me with violent intent, which I really believe is a good thing, music will always reach a certain creative nadir´and (hopefully, please god!)someone will come along and rightously rip up the party plan.

I've given it my first listen and I give it a 3/5 though every song is solid nothing really captured me.
