THE TEARS – HERE COME THE TEARS
[INDEPENDIENTE]

Suede was a great band. Even after the falling out between lead singer Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler, Suede remained one of the UK’s best bands throughout the 90’s. Now, here come The Tears.
Anderson and Butler have reunited, attempting to recapture the magic that made them Britain’s greatest songwriting duo since Morrissey and Marr. Unfortunately, it seems it’s not that easy. Butler’s return does nothing to return that dark, mysterious aura that surrounded Suede’s music during the early 90’s. Instead, Here Come The Tears continues the trend towards the sunnier side of Suede that started with the first of the post-Butler albums, 1997’s Coming Up.
Sadly, another trend continued is the weak self-parody that began on Suede’s final album, 2002’s A New Morning. Anderson is still recycling old clichés (and trying on some horrid new ones like the “Bonnie and Clyde refrain in the first single, “Refugees), while Butler sounds like he’s covering late 90’s Suede tunes. There are a few new gems, but overall the album comes up well short.
Let this be a warning to all those still wishing for a Smiths reunion.
