Nine Inch Nails – With Teeth

ALBUM REVIEW
NINE INCH NAILS – WITH TEETH
[INTERSCOPE RECORDS/I NOTHING]

Some things you can’t rush. It’s been nearly six years since the last Nine Inch Nails studio album- not an unusually long gap for Trent Reznor, but it can still be an excruciating wait for NIN fans. Well, it’s been well worth it.

With Teeth is a hard, dense, dark and paranoid masterpiece. In great contrast to 1999’s The Fragile, Reznor is more focused than ever with this new record. Autobiographic themes of severe depression and alcohol abuse serve as the main dialogue throughout. One departure comes with the powerhouse protest of the first single, “The Hand That Feeds You- easily the best in the litany anti-war songs that have come in the wake of the war in Iraq. Reznor has kept the superior musicianship and production skills of The Fragile while bringing back the swagger, venom and emotional depth of Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral.

With Teeth may very well go down as the best album of 2005.

5/5

chrisarclark is alive! YO!

I have only heard snippets of this new recording, but I didn't care for what I heard. Maybe, I should actully listen to entire songs, if not the whole thing.

I am pretty sure, I spelled the name right that time.

I really don't think I will ever understand your tastes, chris. Not to suggest that they're all bad, but I'll just call them unpredictable.

I haven't gotten into it at all, actually. I have it lying around, hoping that the next time I pop it in I like it better. I do like it better than when I first heard it, but since the Niyaz and Jaga Jazzist albums are already better than this one, With Teeth can't possibly be the best album of 2005...

I heard this album is about his alcohol abuse (as you stated) as well as his drug abuse he said he recently stopped with recently. The single "The Hand That Feeds" may well be perceived his struggle with his emotional era of '94-Present. But I can see it being a anti-protest song. Reznor's latest work is great. It doesn't quite capture you quickly like his other releases but the more listens you give it the better the album gets. Reznor takes a step back with Pretty Hate Machine but some songs like You Know What You Are? bring back the hard, gritty, industrial hard type of sound seen on The Downward Spiral. His choices of bringing in live drums is a good bonus to this album and gives a adrenaline rush to the music. The lyrics are the centerpoint on this album like his others but, these are quite strong. Take a step away from The Fragile was a great move and I love it! Good review Clark I was about to make a review on this album lol.
My Grade: A-

Samoan Joe's Barman: You want a pint, you go to the pub.
Bacon: I thought this was a pub!
Samoan Joes Barman: It's a Samoan pub.

What if this whole crusade's a charade,
And behind it all there's a price to be paid,
For the blood which we dine,
Just to fight in the name of the holy and the divine?
