Cool The Minutemen

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread for these guys, because they truly were a fantastic group of musicians. Easily one of the best things to ever find initial inspiration in punk rock. (( And definitely one of the best bands of the '80s. )) Their sound was obviously based in punk (( and their political ideology )) but their range of influence was far more broad, incorporating Jazz, Funk, Folk, and anything else they could think of, while still sounding exactly like themselves. I'd say every one of the records is a classic. The loss of Boon was definitely one of the greatest misfortunes in rock history, but at least they were able to record more than say, Joy Division, before tragedy struck.

Anyone else a fan?

well I've been meaning to pick up Double Nickels on the Dime for some time now, but you don't see it that much in record shops and being a double cd it's sometimes rather expensive... but yeah what I've heard of them, I really liked... they're a band I'd really love, I think...

Double Nickels is one of my desert island discs. My copy is a single disc though, so it might not end up being that expensive for you. The Punch Line is another one I like, and 3-Way Tie For Last, and, well...pretty much everything I've heard

But I agree that Double Nickels is an excellent starting point. That is my favorite, and as the band themselves are easy enough to get into, it shouldn't take anyone new to the band to find out if they like them or not. To me, the Minutemen are one of the more essential punk bands. And Mike Watt is an absolute pleasure to listen to on bass.

I also like some of the Firehose stuff. Haven't heard quite as much, and it is second to the Minutemen, but what I have heard is definitely worthy of mention.

well eh, I've got Double Nicks for some time and it is indeed a great record (although I can't say I like all tracks, there's just too much of them for that to be possible), but what should I get next?

These guys rule!

Mike Watt is a fantastic bass player. He's got some great solo stuff as well.

There's also some live recordings here.

Has anyone got this Minute Men album? It's awful. The perils of drinking when record shopping.
