Troum

After a year or so of randomly lurking on this forum, I've decided to finally post more. :)

I randomly got Troum's Sigqan after a recommendation from a friend of mine (who also happens to be a music snob) and I am absolutely in love with it. It's more encompassing and engrossing than much of what I've heard from the likes of Robert Rich or Alio Die (or the amazing collaboration between the two, dubbed Fissures).

Can anyone tell me exactly what they think of Troum and maybe give me more recommendations from there? I'd appreciate it greatly!

Well, I'm not familiar with their music, but they seem like something Equinox might know something about, so maybe we'll get a response once he's posting regularly again.

I will try to listen to some samples later so I can at least give further listening suggestions.

I've only heard the odd track, and I must admit, I was fairly impressed. I've just never seen an album by them whilst I've been out and about.

Well, i like their Tjukurrpa series, mostly the first 2. There are 3 to them. Most people tended to like their Maeror Tri output before the decided to either disband or change names to Troum. The recent album 'The Singles' by Maeror Tri is actually pretty good.

when it comes to Maeror Tri, i'd recommended the Meditamentum I and II discs, and when it comes to Troum, I'd recommend the ones listed in the first paragraph and also the collaboration with Yen Pox called 'Mnemonic Induction'

If you like this material, you may even like Vidna Obmana, another great sound/drone/ambient artist.

If you have any others to ask about, feel free to

Sorry for the long reply time.

I just ordered The Singles from Aquarius and it should be here in a few weeks. In the time between your reply and this one, I've checked out a good batch of Vidna Obmana's output and I'm very impressed. There are a lot of collaborations with Steve Roach, someone who never really caught my interest before, but I'm now enjoying a lot of his work because of it. The collaboration The Ambient Expanse is downright excellent.

The other Troum stuff I checked out isn't quite what I expected it to be, but I definitely enjoy it. The Yen Pox collaboration is fantastic. I also found an album done with Tam Quam Tabula Rasa and Kallabris called Kasha-Pashana which I really enjoy.

I also kind of found out some other artists on my own through research... What's your opinion on the Aeolian String Ensemble? I've only heard Eclipse, but I can't get enough of it. Also, Robert Rich and Alio Die's album Fissures (which I mentioned in the first post) never ceases to grasp me.

Thanks for all of the recommendations, man. This is some really great stuff.

I just got The Singles in the mail today. I really enjoy this. The packaging is also pretty cool.

Yeah, 'the singles' is definitely a good start point for Troum. I think I enjoy the Yen Pox release just as much as everything else, but I must stick by Tjukurrpa 1 choice. I can't get enough of it. Haven't listened to the 'kasha pashana' release. Maybe I should check it out.

I actually enjoy the Aeolian String Ensemble. If you can track it down, i'd listen to the album 'lassithi/elysium'. Nice release by the group.

Yeah, that release from Alio Die isn't the best. My favorite has to be his collaboration with Mathias Grassow called 'Expanding Horizons'. It originally came out on Vinyl via Amplexus, but Release records re-released it as a 2cd set. Great artwork and great album.

Another good collab of Vidna obmana and Steve roach is 'Well of Souls'.

If you're into progressive type ambient music, I'd check out Steve Roach's 'Core' album, and if you want to hear something a little more mellow, i'd definitely check his 'Dreamtime Return' album. I can't get enough of his catalog.

Some other artists are as follows:

Michael Stearns
Jorge Reyes
Jeff Pearce
Arbre Noir
bardoseneticcube
byron metcalf
Ixohoxi
Richard Bone
Viridian Sun
Wilt

That's just a few recs from me via dark ambient/drone/tribal type music. You may not like it all, but it gives you a wide variety of stuff.

Another artist you may want to check out is Bad Sector.
