I play electric bass guitar, but the goal of course is to play the upright. Unforuntately you have to spend a wealth of money to get you an upright that's worth a damn. Playing upright bass is such a different experience then playing electric. It's almost more like wrestling than playing a musical instrument. I respect the jazz upright players so much, but I guess I identify more with the folks like Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Jonas Hellborg, Michael Manring, Jeff Berlin, Anthony Jackson. . . and the like. In the case with all those cats, I am glad I was a listener first. It gave a direction to my studies. I heard those cats play, and instantly my mind was thinking,"Yeah, I want to be able to do that!" Course then the reality sets in. . . and you find out just how much time you have to dedicate to get to that point. Funny, I don't mind.
