Good/Bad Blues

Like any genre there are those who can and those who can't, thoughts? Just remember that if you bad-mouth Lead Belly your head might end up in a drivin-wheel and your body won't never be found...

Oh, yes, there is plenty of good and bad Blues. Here's a look:
Good Blues:
Lead Belly (I ain't gettin' my head got in no drivin'-wheel)
Robert Johnson
Charley Patton
Son House
Son Simms Four (with Muddy Waters)
Muddy Waters (pre-Chicago)
BB King (pre-1970)
Skip James
Blind Willie Johnson
Elmore James
Howlin' Wolf
Sonny Boy Williamson
Jelly Roll Morton
Mississippi John Hurt
Willie Dixon
John Lee Hooker
-and so on.

Other good Blues artists you've probably never heard of - and probabaly never will again:
WC Handy
Memphis Jug Band
Lightnin' Hopkins
Big Bill Broonzy
Humphrey Lyttelton
Ray Charles (I know you knoy Ray, but have you heard the Genius play some mean, dirty Blues?)
Jimmy Yancy
Pinetop Perkins
Salif Keita
-and so on.

Here are some that are not too appealing, or down right suck:
Stevie Ray Vaughn (the Cock Rocker of Blues. Get the fuck outta town)
Bobby Bland
Billie Holiday (she did play Blues, but in the stylings of jazz. sorry, ladies)
The Bad Blues Band (yeah, no shit)
Keb' Mo'

That's all I got for now.

Well Zola covered a whole lot of ground there, I would only add Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker (to the good list), and I sorta agree about Stevie Ray Vaughan, although he is pretty skilled at what he does.

You mean what he DID, that fucker's pushing up daisies...

Good: Lead Belly (how can you not be cool after icing two guys for fucking around with your lady/ladies)

Bad: Stevie Ray "Chump" Vaughn (his best work is single notes on "Let's Dance" by David Bowie, that's right SINGLE FUCKING NOTES! God Damn i'm glad that fuck's dead!)

Yes, Salif Keita plays a form that is considered a predecessor/roots-based contemporary to the Blues. It's a mix of griot music with rhythms from other parts of west Africa, as well as some influence from Spain, Cuba, and other places. His use of guitar, sax, and organ is done in a very bluesy way. 'Ananamin' is one of the best examples of his African rootsy style of Blues. He rocks.

Check again; Big Bill gets no where near the respect of other greats like Johnson, Dixon, any of the Kings, and myriad Bluesmen less talented than Broonzy was.

I'm not interested in hearing what Satchmo - whoever that is (Louie Armstrong?) - has to say about anything. Billie Holiday was overrated.
