I've used both, and i can quite honestly say that I like them both equally. At the moment i'm playing a 70's reissue strat and it rocks. Before that, I had a Les Paul which was also v. cool. You'll get different sounds from both, and i find the strat to have a wider tonal range, but you don't get nearly the output or sustain you can get from a gibson.

I own a Fender Standard J-Bass, which i love ever so much. It has really nice tone although you need real specific strings to bring out certain sounds. Though, as a bassist, I heard rumors of the glorified Gibson EBs. I look forward to playing one.

I have both. Each guitar (by any manufacturer) has its own character. As long as they're set up properly, they'll sound beautiful.
Once again, "better" isn't a word that applies here.

My first guitar was one of those shitty strat starter packages, you know the ones i mean? really poorly put together, not set up at all. It's left me with a bit of a bias, that an all of my friends who play well play gibson, and i've made that assosiaction in my mind irreversibly.

i have a epiphone, which looks very nice but that's about it ... it has a VERY dodge treble/rhythm switch and goes out of tune if you look at it to hard
good tone for the pricerange though, its just a bit sloppily made
