...and if you haven't listened to the Chemical Brothers or Prodigy by now, that may be a good start as well.

Im a fan of Chemical Brothers and I own "Fat of the Land" from Prodigy.
I guess I lied about being a complete electronic newbie.
I wasn't aware that techno, house, etc. was considered part of the "electronic genre" you guys talked about here. Ive been imagining different versions of music in my head, but it never occurred to me that techno may be one of them. Duuhhh!
I am accustomed to techno (gigi d'agostino(sp?), darude, robert miles, HUGE fan of paul oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, ATB, daft punk, ummmmmm... Stevo...
I lost my techno library due to a hardware failure, so thats off the top of my head.
What kinds of techno are the recommendations you guys gave me?
I suppose I'd like to know what album you guys think is the best techno...
but I'd also like to get some non-techno/house/dance electronic music.
Am I even making sense? I need to educate myself. =/
P.S. Is radiohead electronic???

yeah i would say their later stuff was pretty electronic, like the song Isioteque for example. But did you know that the electronic 'sound scapes' they use now are completely inspired by Autechre? I would recommend Autechre's Tri Repetae++ and Amber. It will take an acquiring of taste for sure, but they are great albums.
p.s. Someone correct me if im wrong about the Radiohead fact.

See, with this, you are stereotyping all electronic music as being 'techno', which it is not. Techno is generally listed not just as the 'housey' club music you here, but the repetitious stuff you always hear.
I've already listed a great deal of 'non-techno' releases, along with a few other posters. Hope that helps.
Is radiohead electronic? I wouldn't necessarily call them electronic, but they are, of course, leaning in that direction with the songs off 'Kid A' and even 'Amnesiac'. I would say they were definitely influenced by Autechre because I vaguely remember seeing Thom Yorke comment about Brown and Booth's material being on his player all the time.
...and yes, you are making sense. When one doesn't know much about something, you have to start from 'somewhere'. You seem to have a good grasp on the dancy, club type stuff. I am just trying to steer you into a different direction. (along with others commenting)

Okay, I still stand by my recommendations, but since you already have some knowledge under your belt then I say go with some IDM or Trip Hop. Going from techno to experimental is still a pretty big leap. Albums like Double Figure by Plaid, Appetite for Destruction by Funkstörung, and Sheath by LFO are a good middle ground between techno and experimental. My personal preference is IDM anyway.

i never said your recommendations were bad, I was just trying to use, as you say, a middle ground. That's why I didn't recommend things like Richard Devine, and the Schematic team.
I like those 3 recommendations you list right above, especially the Funkstorung. If your personal preference is IDM, you should be posting here more often
