Mars volta

the first time i heard a mars volta song, i was put off by the fact that it was a marathon - 13 minutes long. i was really turned off by that. i caught the video for "the widow" on TV and was very impressed by the video AND the song. downloaded the single and i think its really good. has anyone heard the entire new album? i hear the widow is the only bitesize track on it. think its called frances the mute. i guess i should give them another shot. maybe i'll get used to the long tracks. opinions please??

I'm sorry if I sound rude, but there are Mars Volta threads popping up nearly everyday now, the below mentioned ones are two fairly recent ones, so please continue discussing them there...

13 minutes is a marathon? What is the attention span of the average music listener these days, honestly, I'd really like to know. Does everything in modern culture have to resemble fast-food? Honestly, start listening to Classical music and Jazz for some 1-6 hour compositions and beyond, and then come back and talk about "marathons".

i would point out that rock is a necessarily inclined towards terse bursts of pop bliss (dont get all iconoclast with me and try to claim that rock is a vehicle for postmoderism or some shit) so any rock song that gets too long immediately becomes kinda dubious. not that there arent good long songs, but i mean, its rock you know? brahms tore his hair out of his beard for years writting his first symphony. do you think that yes gave their generously extended numbers that kind of treatment? classical music, due to the level of quality inherent in some of it (lest we forget that lots of classical music is shit, and just because it has strings does not make it good), can be tolerated in 30 min doses. rock rarely gets away with that. their just different animals. so because you gotta weight these things differently, i would defintely say that 13 mins qualifies for marathon status (mabes even PROG JUGGERNAUT status, but i of course could be wrong)
