You're right. The 60's are much more than the Beatles and Dylan. There's loads of amazing music. Of course every decade has its share of crap; the 70's are definitely not an exception. The 70's were bloated with showboating, arena-rock drivel.

Off the top of my head, the 60s. But then again, Northern Soul is a 70s thing...

I vote for the 90's since they stole from the other three, making it far more inclusive.

Most of everything was being reborn and mixed-up, it all feeding off of other parts of the industry which were slowly dying. Plus you could walk into the store and buy albums from the other decades, so it's not like that music was lost. The problem was the only way to hear those in concert were if people were ripping it off, which I already said they were doing...but all in good spirit, right?

70's & 80's are the best decades in music. And you should have included 2000-2010 in your poll.

The thing is we're five year blind. Maybe more like 2000-2005

For rock, I took the 90's. It was close between that and the 70's. The 80's to me had the best new wave and the best heavy metal (and the best hip hop, for that matter) but the 90's had a lot more going for it strictly from a "rock" standpoint. Certainly it was a decade that celebrated influences from different genres and subgenres in a single band. From the Grunge scene to the Alt Rock that popped up, to Stereolab's best stuff, all of Mr Bungle (and a couple of Secret Chiefs 3 releases), three great Bjork albums, Primus, and the shoegazer scene, '90-'99 had a lot going on. Not bad for a decade that started with Vanilla Ice and ended with Limp Bizkit. We will see more of its imprint as the current decade goes on.

altrock already popped up in the eighties though with the Replacements and the first R.E.M. albums and postpunkbands like Mission of Burma could also be called altrock somehow...

That's true, and new wave was actually around in the late 70's (Joe Jackson, The Pretenders and Blondie had their best stuff on that side of 1980). I was specifically referring to what was a feature of those spcific decades. As for R.E.M. , I was ignoring them out of design. I find they are a demerit for every decade in which they released an album, although "Radio Free Europe" was and is a great song.
