Post Pink Floyd

What Do you Think About Pink Floyd? Isn't gilmour (one) of the best guitarists in the world? and isn't Fender the best guitar?

Pink Floyd are amazing... And Gilmour has one of the most unique sounds in rock history...

What has always surprised me is that many Pick Floyd fans are well familiar with The Wall, Dark Side and often Meddle, but rarely know a lot of the gems off Obscured By Clouds, More or other early albums...

It seems for some reason many people stop their Pink Floyd "growth" and are content to just enjoy the well known stuff... I feel this is one of those bands where experiencing the bulk of their catalogue would give one a full appreciation of just how great Floyd were...

Personally, they are my second favorite artist in rock history behind The Beatles...

There's always an open discussion somewhere on the forum about Pink Floyd, so theres nothing else I can really say that hasn't been already said.

Pink Floyd is one of the best bands to walk the Earth...

but my question is:

what modern bands have followed a similar style?

Just like many people settle inn with just listening to the old Beatles stuff, and none of the
psychedelic (and absolutely fantastic) newer stuff.

Ask me a year ago and I would've hated them. They've grown on me more than any other band

well i dont like them very much outside of their syd barrett period and as music to fall asleep to (i'm such swine, i know) and i have never really understood the intense adulation that gilmour receives.

but what are some modern bands doin the floyd thing? well there are the obvious similarities between perhaps the most revered contemporary band, radiohead, and pink floyd. they both have kinda vague and somewhat esoteric theories about 'the torpor of the soul under modern capitalist society' or something. they are both all about 'art,' and they both get pretty wacky with their instrumentation.

the flaming lips are also pretty influenced them of course, as are pony-tailed virtuoso fucks dream theater. slightly older than those groups are bands like metallica and tool (ugh (this uggh was well deserved)) both of whom are obviously floyd-obsessed. alot of metal bands profess a devotion to pink floyds grandeur.

plenty of those fey belle and sebastian types are also pretty influenced by the twee silliness of some of the syd barrett years. lots of postpunk bands were inspired by the deep, canvaslike quality of their songs.

My second favorite band ever. I often go for really long periods of time without listening to their albums, sometimes a long time without listening to them at all, and it always amazes me when I give them another listen. Probably the best combination of creativity and quality that I've ever heard, a band of true musical brilliance, in both the Waters and Barrett periods. Gilmour's era I don't think is quite as bad as everyone gives it credit for, but still isn't very good. Still, it's incosequential compared to stuff that came before it.

Pink Floyd are great. My favourites are Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and Piper. The others are cool. Not a big fan of anything after the wall. Even the wall isnt that great.

I know what Psychy Psyd is talking about though. I guess I am sort of an example of that. Well not exactly though, but there are one or two pre wall albums I still dont know. Obscurred By Clouds being one of them.

I am actually planning to shroom and watch the wall movie tonight. That movie never seems to get old since I am never sober when I watch it (and I swear I always see something I didn't see before).
