heard a few songs in a record shop today and they seemed okay enough to hear on the radio once in a while, meaning that it won't make me want to switch the channel (well unless they're grossly overplayed, but I don't listen to the radio much anyways), but nothing more than that... a little boring all in all, I guess...

juste seeing this now. whata pompous thing for you to say.

iam also pleasantly surprised to see that ihav no need to defend myself as panbient has already taken the liberty, and ithank him for that. still, iwill juste offer a few words, if not for need, for want.

i'll hav you know, pelican, that iam indeed funny- infact iam being funny right now- ha. as for my "very narrow taste in music", well that is all relative, isnt it? imean, surely ido hav a comparitively narrow taste in music to some, but ihav vast taste in comparison to others. ihavnt paid enough attention to your postings here to be able hazzard a guess as to how you and icompare, but really its netiher here nor there.

this was a discussion on Coldplay, and Coldplay alone; and as far as that goes id be willing to bet that iknow basically as much or more than anyone here. iam very familiar with all of their official studio recordings and most of their official live recordings and ihav seen them live in concert as early in their career as their first show in Toronto and as recent in their career as their last show in Toronto, played just a month ago. ifind enjoyment in all of their songs- displaying my ineclipsable range of taste in the realm of Coldplay- but istill can point to what isee as their best work and give reasons as educated as the next poster here.

you call me pompous, but you are the one who sees himself fit enough to make such a derogatory personal comment about someone else. imade one joke at the expense of a poster whom ive always thought well of and who more or less thinks well of me, and when questions came up as to the tone or intention of my post imade clear that iwas indeed joking. you clearly were not joking, and though ifrankly could not care less, iwould suggest you look in the mirror before leveling personal accusations of such a nature.

so pompous of me to go on as long as that- ha.

anyway, impressions on the album anyone? i bought it on the day of release, and although it is starting to grow on me i can't help but feeling a little disappointed. the electronic sound seemed like an interesting direction for them to take, and on some tracks it really does work, creating an epic feel, but on too many of the songs their original sound seems to have been smoothed out, almost to the point of sounding synthetic. coldplay were never exactly a rawk band in the first place, but x&y feels like a naff pop record.white shadows, talk and low are currently my favourite songs, i'm just really hoping the rest of the album grows on me in the same way.

yeah not as mammoth and cool as I was expecting but I wouldn't go so far as that Rolling Stone article where the dude called Chris Martin an egohead. I think its a decent album and the guy never fails to deliver pretty, lovely songs.

pretty? lovely? lame! what does coldplay do that hasn't already been done a thousand times before a thousand times better? is it the piano? his lame pseudo-pained voice? his ridiculously hackneyed and unimpressive lyrics? their ability to grind out one or two radio-only-hits per album?

Finally heard the new album. The word "epic" definitley comes to mind. Not that I think it's an epic album, it's just that you can tell that's what they're shooting for. It seems like they wanted every track to be epic, or a ballad, or an anthem or something like that. All of the ambience from the production really got on my nerves. It sounds a lot like Out of Nothing by Embrace. That album was a bit more bare bones though.

when i listen to it i keep remembering reading in interviews how meticulously they tried to perfect the album, and that's kind of the impression that i get from it as a whole. it's really very pleasant, but it's been streamlined so much that it's difficult to make an emotional connection with it.
