It's just that much of the music back-in-the-day comes across to me as one-dimensional and fogettable. It has the heart but none of the soul. Do you get what I am saying? There is a reason why jazz has lived on but the whole Ziegfield culture is a thing of the past. A lot of the music of the pre-WWII world was very faddish, and fads don't last.

Don't hurt me!

Man, someone plays at high stakes. Anyway, not sure how that series of comments is gonna roll over with the board, but I'll tell you right off the bat that you sound like you're in a bit over your head. I'm not saying that whatever music you're talking about isn't bad (I'm not sure if I know exactly, but I think I might have an idea), but I think you're making a huge generalization about "old"/pre-WWII music. There was plenty of bad music from that period on the pop charts, I suppose, as in any period, but a lot of what is easily the best music ever made comes from that period. If you stick around here long enough, you'll definitely become acquainted with what I'm talking about, and hopefully will change your mind about it. I hope you don't get turned off by this post, I don't mean to sound like a jerk or unwelcoming, I'm just trying to explain in summarized, easygoing terms what most people around here's reaction to what you just said is going to be.

Also, as much as I dearly love Rhapsody in Blue, I would not put it in my top ten pieces of all time.

And of course, welcome to the board! As I said before, I think you'll find it rewarding to hang around here. And we would of course love to have you. Shit, you're already a Grasshoppa, so your foot's a bit too far in the door to just duck out now anyway.

All that said, I'm going to leave you with this and suggest that you note the year.

1. It's been a while since I had to break these out....but you're 16 and might not have any clue about the Grasshoppa reference.

All the Grasshoppas
are all trying to take the pebble from Satchmo's hand....but still haven't done so.

2. You will find that pretty much no thread stays on topic....which is one of the interesting things about this place.

Hey, remember back when you were that young. As in, 2-years or so ago and your Ingmar Bergman posts.

And you came close to having both The Squirrels and THE SHADOWS sent in your first week.

I don't think jazzfromhell comprehended Purple Bottle's post when he replied with the link to a Duke Ellington performance. Yes, jazz was 'popular' back then, but Purple Bottle explicitly states that "jazz" is for the ages, so to speak. I kind of understand where Purple Bottle is coming from regarding popular music from the first half of the 20th century. Take 'roots musics' out of the mix and a lot of music from that time period doesn't translate well today. Of course, the low fi recording technology of those times doesn't help to capture the full essence of the music either. Plus, our life today is beyond the imaginations of people living in those much simpler times. Time flys! Our pop tunes will be a curiosity someday, too

What is that tune? That's awesome! Sounds like an old belgian musician, who's name I keep forgetting. He did something with machines, and music based on mathematics or somethin...
