Is Fiona Apple any good?
Or is it a load of overhyped controversial bullshit?

I have heard of the Free Fiona campaign. Someone posted something about it on another website a while back.
I have no idea if it's just BS or not. I did like her first album, Tidal. Love her voice. Not sure if this album is worth all the attention but then I haven't heard it either.

I didn't hear much of her that was worth ANY hype, myself. Taste, of course, is relative.
But it does not surprise me that Sony would be behind holding her back. Incubus sued them a couple of years ago (I don't know how that played out) over royalty issues. We could actually throw this into the music industry. I tend not to support major labels. I do buy an occasional CD from one, but that's rare.
I really don't see why, especially against today's musical backdrop, Sony doesn't think that a Fiona Apple album would fly. One, I can't see it being a whole lot worse than what she's already put out, and it's not like all of her fans keeled over. Two, compared to today's pop music, she can actually be marketed as "a breath of fresh air." I can't see how a Fiona Apple release could be much of a money pit for Sony. Unless, of course, they have HEARD the album and know something we don't...

I love Fiona Apple very very much. I like "extraordinary machine" a lot, I appreciate and enjoy the album thoroughly, but the free fiona BS gets on my nerves. I mean, I wish they'd release the album, but from sony's marketing point of view I can see why they didn't: the songs are orchestral, almost over-the-top, the tracks dont really stand out, and I strongly doubt that sony would turn a profit on it at all.
That said: I dont normally condone piracy, but if you're a fan go download it. sony's started cracking down but it's still not hard to find.
by the way: did you know that the cd was produced by Jon Brion?

Probably because she was under contract with Sony. Anyway I've heard http://www.thecrutch.net/mp3/fionaap...arymachine.mp3 and while I somewhat like it, the cutesy pronounciation really gets on my nerves.
