XTC - why are they so loved?

I remember like five years ago, someone put on 'skylarking' and when the song 'super, supergirl' came on, i was pretty much convinced that it was the best song ever written. so... crafted!! so dense! sweet bliss made real!

then i heard like whole albums, and my reaction was like 'well occasionally, a truly incredible song; but so much boring stuff to wade through!'

do you guys like em? their pretty psychedelic i think.

yeah, I like them a lot.
frankly, I've always wondered why they didn't break out a little more than they did.
I think the trick might be Partridge's voice.
I think it's one of those voices you either like or you don't, like Ringo.

I think XTC is one of my "Beatles Methadone" bands.
I like the Beatles so much but the repeated listenings can make me need to take a break.
XTC, Robyn Hitchcock, Bonzo Dog Band and many others can very nearly scratch my Beatles itch until I start to tire of IT.

And then I go back to Beatles.

lather, rinse, repeat.

most of what I've heard of them was quite enjoyable, but I haven't heard whole albums yet

I like XTC. Never really thought of them as psychedelic, though. Oh well, time to dust off the old albums and take another listen.

I like XTC... In their regular incarnation they are not purely psychedelic, but were very much influenced by psychedelia... As The Dukes of Startosphere they were more psychedelic then many of the original 60's artists they were trying to emulate...

XTC is fantastic. Great song writting, arranging, and producing. "Skylarking" is a great album from start to finish, as is "Nonsuch" and "Oranges and Lemons".

I've only heard Nonsuch. I bought a used copy simply because I liked the artwork. Good things can come of good album art! I didn't like it at first, but a couple months later I sat down to listen and see if I wanted to sell it and I didn't want to. I spin the disc every once and a while.

Nonsuch is a great album. Check out Apple Venus Volume 1, another great later period work for XTC.
