Animal Collective

Only got around to listening to them now (although I'd heard about them for quite a while)...

weird but lovely stuff (only listened to some songs of Sung Tongs yet)...

"Leaf House" is my current favourite...

what do you people think about them?

NOTE: if some mod (i.e. Seba) think this would fit better in the alternative section (I wasn't sure which one to choose), then move it please

I think Animal Collective is experimental enough to include here. I enjoy both of their current releases quite a bit, and am surprised at the amount of fanfare they've gotten, seeing how good they actually are.

It's been a long time since I've heard a rock-oriented group be so creative with their instrumentation and vocals, not to mention their song-structures and production, which sound almost completely unlike anything that's come before them. You can hear doses of modern electronica, punk, folk melodies, traditional pop, and noise, but it's hard to pinpoint any one single point of influence. One of my current favorites.

the soundscapes consisting of mostly vocals remind me of those last tracks on Freak Out!...

I've only heard one single, I can't remember what it was now (something about a rabbit), but I was sufficiently appalled to write a review on RYM. It sounded like childrens tv presenters being allowed to record music, desperately trying to sound wacky and zany, and ending up being a cringeworthy embarrassment.

I can see how you would say that from that song. It isn't their best. They have an eclectic sound, so one song won't necessarily sound anything like another. You might enjoy their first release, "Here Come The Indian" more, DF -- contains a bit more ambient and industrial textures. Here Comes The Indian is more rock based in general. Of course, there is that "wacky and zany" element to a lot of their music, so that might be a turnoff for you.

Thanks for the advice, but unless I come across a copy on sale for peanuts, I doubt I'll be parting with any cash.

I think I've developed a deep-seated revulsion of the band, similar to Satchmo's feelings on disco.

that's exactly what I like about them... it seems they're a band that you either hate or love then...

Here Comes the Indian is their third or fourth release, iirc. This is the order as I know it:

Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
Danse Manatee
Campfire Songs
Here Comes the Indian
Sung Tongs
Prospect Hummer EP (due out in May)

Re: Campfire Songs - In Slippi, does the tempo actually go from 7/8 --> 4/4 --> 3/4? It sounds like it, but the 7/8 bit throws me.
