Amp for a bass

Well I've had my bass now for a few months and I've been useing my computer speakers as an amp. My birthday is coming up and the computer speakers are getting a bit old so I figured I'd ask for an amp.

I'm just starting out so I don't need anything too crazy, but I'm trying to take the same approach with the amp as I did with the guitar which is not buying the cheapest piece of crap there is, but rather something decent even if it involves a little extra cash just so I wouldn't be upgrading it too soon. Well I have no knowledge in this department, I plan on asking my teacher later this week but I figured I'd post here asking for some suggestions/help. Oh and I realize that a price range would be the most desired piece of information, but I can't really give that cause I really don't know anything about amps.

Thanks in advance RMers

...that isn't the same model as my old bass player had but let me tell you...these things haul ass for the money...

i have to go with magichand on this one. peavey is a REALLY good amp manufacturer. a lot of people seem to have a negative view about their amps since they're all solid state and therefore lack the 'purity' that tubes provide. i think that's bollocks. i've played peaveys for guitars and basses and i've never had ANY issues with one of their amps (aside from the time we snapped off the volume knob on one of them... )

either way you can usually find a really solid peavey amp for considerably less than other big name products. i even used to play my 5 string bass through a small practice guitar amp and the thing would NOT die. i wouldn't necessarily recommend it but it just goes to show how solid their gear is.

My guitar is a Peavey and I must same I've been very happy with it so far so I planned on looking into them. I'll check out Yorkville too.

I asked a guitarist friend of mine about bass amps and he started asking me about what kind of sound I wanted to get out of the amp, any insight as to what the different types of sounds there are that he might be talking about?

I have also had good experiences with Peavey bass amps...big Black Widows and whatnot...but I HATE the sound of their guitar amps...they all have an annoying 1KHz frequency...the BIG ones are impressive but not up against OTHER big ones...to my ears anyway...

that one looks really good. it should serve you well until you start playing crowds over 100. the main use of your amp until you start gigging on a regular basis is going to be being heard over the drums, and that amp shouldn't have any problems being loud enough.

something else to keep in mind when getting a bass amp. they're HEAVY.

a 200 watt amp with four 15 inch speakers is also going to weigh four times as much as the 100 watt amp with one speaker. unless you're going to be playing shows you're going to have something weighing somewhere around 150-200lbs that never goes above 2 because it'll drown out everything else in the room.
