i'll agree that it is "forced" in the sense that Radiohead made a conscious effort to significantly change their sound between
Pablo Honey and
The Bends and between
OK Computer and
Kid A.
Hail To The Theif was likely a conscious effort to reign in some of the
Kid A/Amnesiac type experimentation as well.
that said, they hav made no more a conscious effort in changing direction than Beck did between
Mellow Gold and
Odelay,
Odelay and
Mutations,
Mutations and
Midnite Vultures,
Midnite Vultures and
Sea Change [the most blatantly obvious] and
Sea Change and
Guero [this makes it sound like Beck is more versatile, but really he juste moves back n forth between two modes, the extremes of which are Midnite Vultures and Sea Change, wheras Radiohead hav seen a steady outward progression from
Pablo Honey to
Kid A/Amnesiac].
but since when is it a bad thing for an artist to want to consciously push their art in different directions? youre assessment that Radiohead's ambitions hav not "come off as genuinely cool" is somewhat laughable- Radiohead are likely the best band of the past 10years, regardless of how "cool" you might think they are. Beck is also one of the greatest/most consistent artists of the past 10 years, but he doesnt measure up to the heights of Radiohead.
the two albums in question in this poll make for a ridiculous comparison, made only more ridiculous by the closeness in the poll results so far. this should be a no brainer and well, isuppose it has been for most, juste not in the usual sense of the phrase.
