I've been relistening to this band alot lately and I have to say, they AMAZE me. I don't know which album it is, but the one that has "Sick Man" and "Damn that River" and "Down in a Hole" is my favorite right now. The singer's voice is unbelievable to me, and their ability to mix grunge and metal so beautifully has me in total green envy. I find them to be very underrated from the perspective of how I rarely hear them credited as a groundbreaking or boundry pushing band, which I think in sooo many ways they are.

that would be the 'dirt' album.

to me the reason they don't get credited for being groundbreaking or boundary pushing is that they weren't, or at least i don't see / hear how.

soundgarden had been mixing metal and grunge perfectly for years before alice in chains came around. they were THE band that got major labels looking to seattle for the next big thing. if anything i think AiC got lucky that they weren't able to achieve any sort of commercial success prior to becoming a 'grunge' band, it would have made it too obvious they were a band that kept up with scenes as opposed to one that created them.

Alright, I know I'm going up with second degree black belt kung fu music master of the radio mute universe and am probably gonna get my ass kicked, especially since I know this band but have trouble remembering which songs and albums are which (I throw it on my ipod and pay little attention after that, just listen) but I stand by them being groundbreaking because yes, soundgarden beat them to the punch, but not by a great amount, and soundgarden didn't use orchestration in the way they did. Not only that, but soundgarden may have some memorable great songs, along with other pioneers of the genre, but there was something about AiC's ability to make song sections that you remember instantly.

No one will forget the epic creciendo of I Fade Away, along with it's chromatic brooding verses, all mixed in with the acoustic uplifting sections in between it's brilliant. Then you have songs like "the rooster" where the energy builds and builds until your moment of ecstacy "You know he ain't gonna die!"

I think in melody, innovation, and orchestration they have soundgarden beat, maybe not by a huge margin, but enough, and soundgarden was not far enough ahead of them you can say they stole their sound from them or got their chops from them though I will admit I know little else about the first few grunge bands. But as far as what is remembered from radio and such, I find Alice in Chains to be quite prolific and ahead of their time when you considered how few have replicated the unique sound they had to the quality and memorable degree they did it. Symph judo chop hiyah!

yeah we'll just have to agree to disagree *kick punch - it's all in the mind*

soundgarden didn't use as much orchestration early on because they weren't trying to incorporate the cheese of poofy hair metal ballads from the late 80s into their current stuff *kick punch chop block*

i'll give them kudos on the melody / harmony side of things. i can't think of any other 90s bands that did double vocals as well as AiC. soundgarden smokes them on innovation though, the alternate tunings and odd time signatures were what set SG apart from the crowd. *duck jump turn pose*

not quite sure what you're getting at with orchestration though. aside from the unplugged album and a random track or two from 'jar of flies' everything was pretty much standard guitar drums and bass action. by the time JoF came out in '94 nirvana had already had a touring cellist with them and the idea of tossing in 'proper' classical instruments into grunge music was about as fresh as a flannel shirt. *kick punch, chop block, chop kick, punch block*

as far as what's remembered from the radio??? on here? it's the second time this week i have to ask someone if they know what the word mute means i wouldn't say AiC stole any specific bands sound i just don't find them nearly as great as some people would have them seem. they're not a bad band but i'll always see them as followers as opposed to originators. doesn't really affect the end product but it does affect the amount of personal attention i give to the band.

*hatatatacha! that's it for today* bonus PPC points if you know where everything between the asterisks came from hehehe

Dude, I concede actually. Your points are solid and I can't disagree, I guess all I can truly say is I like AiC more. And it's funny, the Mute part didn't make sense to me, I thought, "Why would you make a radio station called Mute?" I cannot believe it took you saying that to get me to realize this forum is anti radio by definition, I have to apologize to Satchmo, I understand why he got so defensive when I was talking about wanting better music from the radio.

Also, kick punch it's all in the mind, that is a song, that part is chanted and I THINK it's from a television show, or some sort of comedy band. However, that's as much as I know WITHOUT looking it up, now I'll cheat and find out what it is for sure...

Oh wait, this is before I'm looking it up on youtube, the more I'm thinking about it doesn't it say something like "Kick Punch it's all in the mind, if you mess with me I'm sure you'll find that the things I teach ya are sure to beatcha, now sit back relax and get a lesson from teacher!" YEAH! I'm SURE of it! That's the lyric, and I feel even more confident this was from a cartoon or something, ok NOW I find out from youtube. Hmmm... for some reason youtube isn't loading, but dude, I know I just proved I know what you're talking about even if I can't fully remember the name...
