I find the debate between the dark depths of grunge and the fluffy edges of glam metal to be insubstantial. The term rock n' roll itself means sex!
A friend, who digs himself a lot of good music, once told me that 'happy music' (as in happy and/or happy sounding) sucks. After I cited his retardation, he dared me to give him some examples of good 'happy music.' I supplied "Bo Diddley", "(Your Love Keeps Liftng Me) Higher and Higher", "Do You Love Me?", "Shake, Rattle, n' Roll" (Big Joe's original), "Oogum Boogum", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "She Sells Sanctuary", "Big Bird", "Hold On (I'm Coming)", "I'm So Glad", "Sex Machine", "Shake Your Moneymaker" (talkin' Elmore James, people!), "Wang Dang Doodle", "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)", practically all jump blues, and pretty much everything by Louis Prima.
I won the debate, quickly.
There have been songs about screwin' n' booze since man put stick to stone and made a beat. Although I'd take grunge over glam metal, I find a lot of grunge pretentious and generally don't listen to much of it anymore. The Smashing Pumpkins are the only band from that 90s mix that I still listen to frequently. I've come to really dislike STP and Pearl Jam, and can only take AiC in small doses.

 ??? grunge is pretentious but the only 90s act you listen to on a regular basis is the smashing pumpkins?
i agree there was a fair amount of pretentious pontification going on back in '92 but come on, corgan was the epitome of pretentious back in the day (well, not counting the tea party's jeff martin hehehe)

All happily agreed. I've always just preferred the SP sound.
I should point out, and I think I've mentioned this before, that during the grunge era I was mostly discovering Blues. I may have been one of the few teens who not only knew who Lead Belly was, but had recordings and a knowledge of his life, before Nirvana did "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." While my friends were "Did you hear the new STP tune?" I was "No, but check out this Skip James guy!"
I got more than a few s. I fondly recognize grunge as my generation's music and I did enjoy much of it at the time, and toss some on now and then still, but it didn't do for me what it did for others. Blues was my musical venue for relief of teenage angst.
Anyway, I know I listen to some pretentious music. It's all good. I think I find grunge pretentious in sort of the same way that I find glam metal silly. It's just part of the package.

@Zola:
If you're talking about this very thread, I'd like to add that from my perspective there was never a Glam vs Grunge debate. I just found it curious that one of the premium Grunge acts had a Glam background. And musically/lyrically Panbient and me were just wondering what might've happened had some then famous Glam acts crossed over to Grunge, that's all.
Now if you're talking about a general GvG debate, I find it quite interesting to compare the two, since I listen to both (OK, not that much Grunge, but still). But what I find ridiculous is the ideological edge to it that was brought in especially by Eddie Vedder if I remember correctly. That was just stupid.
As far as the supposedly pretentious acts go, they show up everytime a buck is to be made.

I wasn't directing a comment, just making discussion, and I was actually defending glam metal, as odd as that is.
