Two days and counting,
BABY!
P.S. Just saying....that Grasshoppa jazzfromhell should be seeing DA MAN and maybe semi-possibly-some-phantom whatnot. Although, I wouldn't hold my breath on that second part....

So....much musical knowledge was dropped but taking into account Satchmo is talking about DA MAN that was to be expected.....however,
I don't do this much if ever....
but an example of one of the nights....as per usual after the sets DA MAN and others was a guest of Satchmo at some place or another....
DA MAN is in his usual attire which looks like a cross between Little Lord Fauntleroy & Louis the the Fifteenth! He's wearing purple velvet pantaloons (I mean the kind that button above the knee) w/ lilac colored hose, a purple striped shirt w/ a grey tie....not knotted but flipped almost foulard style but straight down. All he needed was a scepter! He completed the look with brown "dressing room" slippers/loafers with embroidery on them and several silver bracelets and a turquoise bracelet. He also smoked non-stop these " Indian Spirit" cigarettes.
Well, DA MAN extends his hand to me saying " Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, Lincoln bed, can you get me a weekend?" Now, Grasshoppas, Mob, "fans" and whatnots, when you read this you have to read his voice in a Cole Porter/ Noel Coward " I've just been to a most wonderful party!" type voice! And he says "Satchmo, Satchmo, Satchmo, do you know that group!". Uhm, what group. Then he says "I'm Cecil Taylor". I'm like "Did he just forget who he's talking to? WTF?!".
So..... DA MAN is being typical Cecil mode and was holding court!! He would just go from topic to topic, never stopping and while he might not remember the names, he knows every good play and movie ever made. He kept talking about " yes, yes, that Inge play then Marilyn made the movie" and what was it called?" "Bus Stop!, Satchmo dropped. "Yes, yes, wonderful!" and Kim, Kim what was her name who was in the play" Satchmo: " Kim Hunter!" " Yes, yes, wonderful!" and then there was that Chekhov play that so and so and so and so was in ..." Satchmo: " Oh yes, Three Sisters" DA MAN: " Oh, marvelous, exactly, more champagne!" (he pronounces it the French way). He started talking about something else, which only Satchmo probably will remember what else....some movie/play and then he was talking about someone being in this Bertolt Brecht play and Satchmo was like " Oh, Mother Courage!". He pointed at Satchmo and exclaimed " Yes! yes! wonderful!" Satchmo swears for a few hours there I felt like I was on Jeopardy and I was going for " Actors & Plays" for $1,000,000,000!!
Well, he kept talking about Maximillian ( Max Roach), Abbey Lincoln and S indey Poitier and their movie with Paul Newman and Diahann Caroll (as in, the film.... Paris Blue with DA KING making a cameo....as in, Satchmo).
DA MAN knows every good play and film ever but just couldn't remember their names!!! If anyone not named Satchmo said anything, or tried to interject something they wanted to say (only a couple of really brave souls did this) he would dismiss it with a wave of his hand and say " Yes, well...." and go on with what he wanted to. Finally, a peon whispered in my ear and I had to go. I told him I had to go see a Grasshoppa do his thing. Grasshoppa? WTF? is a Grasshoppa goes DA MAN? I drop knowledge and he informs he would like to go....

So... if I understood correctly Satchmo and Cecil Taylor went to see Jazzfromhell after they had dinner together which was after Cecil's concert?

Well, technically it must've been the next day, because the only show that Cecil (and Satchmo, assuming he went to all of Cecil's sets) could've made would've been the one during the day on the 19th. If my logic is right and that is the one they were at, it's a shame, because we played a lot better in Brooklyn later that night (in addition to the really bad sound in ABC No Rio that kept us from being able to hear each other very well, our car was being worked on so I had to borrow most of someone else's drum set, which always leads to uncomfortable and worse-than-usual playing on my part). That said, whether you went to that show or in some way that I don't understand got to another one, thanks a million for coming, it truly means a lot to me, hope you and Cecil enjoyed it (assuming he made it, which you didn't explicitly say and like I said would've been very difficult with his schedule, minus the one afternoon show) and I'd be eager to hear your thoughts on it. And if he did go, I'm incredibly honored and excited by the fact that Cecil Taylor attended a concert of mine, especially on the same day that I went to one of his.
Now, on to my Cecil experiences. Not much needs to be said about the second show (11:00 on the 20th), it was as incredible as I'd expected, and not only that but me and my friend (the bassist in the band I'm playing with) ended up getting seated right in front. We were actually right behind Cecil, so it was difficult to see his hands, but it was pretty awesome to be that close. Seeing Cecil has been a dream for me for a couple years now, and one that sometimes I wasn't sure would happen. Can't wait to see him again in October.
The first night actually has a funny story. We finish our set in Brooklyn (one of the best if not the best we've played so far, excitement over hoping to see Cecil Taylor that night may or may not have been a factor in the drums department ), and it's about 10:20. I made a reservation for the 11:00 show that night, just in case I could make it, but at this point that doesn't appear likely. I pack up the drums and equipment as fast as I can (mind you, this involves carrying drums down three flights of stairs and a block to the car, in the middle of Bedford-Stuyvesant), call the Vanguard to ask if there's any room left, and they say there's a few spots but they can't hold my reservation and whether I can get in depends on when I get there. I get dropped off at the subway, work my way over, and by the time I get there it's 11:20 and there's a sign on the door saying the show is sold out. I'm not in tears or anything, because I know I'm going for sure the next day, but I'm aware that if I had gotten there even ten or fifteen minutes sooner I could've gotten in, so I'm not feeling all that great about it. Having never been to the Village Vanguard, I open the door for kicks and see that from sitting on the stairs you can hear what's going on inside, so I sit down and the guy working the door says I can sit and listen for a few minutes, which is of course better than nothing, so I decide I'll sit there until he tells me to leave. I guess it comes with the territory of a Cecil show that there're going to be walk-outs, and what do you know, after about five minutes five or so people walk out. I ask the guy if I can have their spots, and he says it's fine, and lets me in for half price. In I go, the set's only half over, and I'm as happy as a young Grasshoppa can be.
P.S. I was hoping to talk with or at least say hello and thanks for the music to Cecil after the set, but he and Tony really left in a hurry as soon as they were done. I guess I have a Satchmo dinner invitation to thank for that?
P.P.S. While you should of course be watching the music the entire time, it's pretty funny to take a few seconds and observe the different faces that people have when watching Cecil Taylor.

1a. I could have sworn I added in a to be continued.
1b. Technically taking into account how late in the night/early into the it would have been that day. Unfortunately DA MAN could not make it.
His stamina, physically and mentally, is astounding, however, two sets a night for 6 straight days and he's 79. If he came it would have had to have been the early show and that really wouldn't have given him much time to recover and prepare for the sets for that night. It would have better if the show was on the 21st. He lives in Brooklyn.
2. Satchmo and three of the horde did miss the first set of the DA MAN to catch the Brooklyn gig. Only for a Grasshoppa would Satchmo skip DA MAN to watch someone not a Satchmo perform. Getting in and out without being noticed by anyone was pulled off as usual by the peons and THE SHADOWS. I wish I had known you were going to the second set of the 19th as well. You had only previously mentioned the 20th.
3. Watching DA MAN from behind him really isn't the best location but it's better than no location.
4. I always find it fascinating when people leave a performance by him or anyone in that vein of music. You would think if they didn't know who he was or the style of music he played they would check before trekking down to wherever. At least you got to see him because of their mental midget behavior.
P.S. Most likely.

1. That's unfortunate, I appreciate his thoughts and efforts, but I was thinking along the same lines as what you're saying and wasn't really sure how he would've done it. Not to mention we didn't even play until 5ish at the afternoon show, so he would've had even less time. I was amazed at what good shape he's in, for someone who's 79 years old he looks like he could even be in his late 50s. The black muscle shirt he was wearing on the 19th showed that there wasn't much extra weight on him, his arms looked all muscle.
2. Now that's an honor and a half, I seriously can't say how much that means to me. Really hope you enjoyed it, but be honest with what you thought of it. Glad you could at least see what me and everyone else in the group thought was one of the best shows we've done. And if it would've meant me getting to Cecil on time, I wish you had known I was going to that set, as well.
3. I had a nicer view of the hands, albeit farther away, the first night. I was over in the elevated aisle by the women's bathroom (which was cool because Cecil walked right by me on his way out, and walked right by me on his way in the second night ).
4. Doesn't make sense to me, either, but like I said, I guess it comes with the territory. Makes for one of those stories I'll tell my grandkids, as well.
