Seperating tracks in an MP3

Is it possible to seperate tracks in an MP3, like taking out the vocals for just the music etc? If so, what program would I use to do that or is there a special method.

I am unaware of any program that actually does this well.

well.. theoretically.. you could isolate the frequency range that a give instrument / vocal / whatever take up in a track.. and with a parametric eq, maybe some multiband compressors.. you could more or less take out a track.. but in practice you it might not work so well.. and you might need to work with a bit of automation of your eq / compressors paramaters over time.. you might try peaks..

Yes, but what would the quality of the end sample be? Surely if you remove certain high and low frequencies from an overall sample, you are removing them from the vocal part as well?
Maybe you could get away with it if you use fx, but will it then be the sample you wanted in the first place?

Thumbs up Kinda...

You can get vocal remover programs, lots of free VST's about. See www.kvr-vst.com

The program basically puts the left channel 180 degrees out of phase with the right channel which silences whatever is in the EXACT middle of the mix, in 95% of songs the vocal is bang in the middle (apart from early stereo stuff in the sixties before the novelty had worn off!!!). It's actually quite surprising how well this works.

Hope this helps.
