Question AMM

Anyone heard of this early group. Saw something on TV about one member, but missed the main gyst. He was foolin' around on prepared guitar, and I think was British...

don't you mean AMM?

Keith Rowe is probably the guy playing the prepared guitar.

Yep, forgot caps. That's the name I remember.
I'm from Australia too, and the program was on SBS, about experimental music. The other interesting subject was someone playing (I think) an unloaded sampler, or maybe I mixed that up with another program. Interesting idea anyway.

You've been watching Subsonic, really great program. There a few more episodes left. SBS is wonderful for producing it.

So where in Australia are you from?

You should try to get to the What is Music Festival.

Some amazing people are coming, check out http://www.whatismusic.com/ for more information.

Thanks for the link! Merzbow! Wow! If I go I'll have to take the Monday off work to recover my hearing!
I'm from Melbourne, by the way.

Nice, Melbourne is a really happening Sydney.

Far more culturally exciting than Sydney.

Do go to some of the shows, I recommend Keiji Haino's Fushitshusha

here's something to add here:

AMM's catalogue is known to be fairly consistant in terms of quality...for those more knowledgable of their music than I, what would you recommend as a top 5?

Ok hit and run time once again, which will be the M.O. for the next month or two.

Without AMM you would not have Revolution #9 for one. They were also a huge influence on Syd Barrett's version of Pink Floyd's sound. AMM and Pink Floyd were at one time both managed by the same people. Who then decided to dump AMM and stick to Floyd. They figured there was more money to be made that way.

It was Keith Rowe who taught feeback to Syd.

AMM, is a group that has had several members that has included at different times: Cornelius Cardew, Eddie Prevost, Lou Gare, Keith Rowe, Christopher Hobbs, Laurence Sheaff, John Tilbury.

There have been as many as 5 members in the group and as little as 2.

The current version includes Prevost, Rowe & Tilbury. This version has been together for around 23+ years. Prevost runs the Matchless label that the majority of AMM's recordings can be found on.

You really can't go wrong with the majority of AMM's recordings. The early days were a lot louder than the current version of AMM. And when you listen to Prevost's "drumming" imagine at one time pre-AMM he was in the Max Roach/Art Blakey school of Jazz drumming. As hard as that is to believe when listening to him now.

As Seba knows I can't be limited to 5.

I have a few of their recordings on my computer..While it's really interesting to listen to, I feel as if I'm missing a large part of what's going on. Are they just an improvisational group or do they have some kind of main theme behind all of their works?

I really couldn't find much informaton on them on the internet.

AMM is total free improvisation.

They never discuss anything about the music before or after playing it.

No preconceived thought at all.
