I'd say King's X. They're pretty well respected by fellow musicians, but never caught on that big with the general public. I can't understand why not.

I'd say that The Fates are under rated since they are virtually unknown except in their own local area.
I can't say that I agree that the Beatleas are under rated...more accurately, they have been given so much credit for everything in modern music from harmonies to songwriting and so on that people don't mention them because they are great by default and many people just get sick of hearing about them all of the time.

I won't exactly say underrated but The Shore are without a doubt the most unrecognized band right now considering thier album is about half a year old. I did a google search for them and found about 20 valid hits. I had to tab one of thier songs by myself and transcribe the lyrics by myself. Anyway I think they're a very good band remeniscent of the Verve.

most people just hear their hits like "one week" and "pinch me" and think "ahh they suck" but if u listen to their early stuff and and a lot of their newer stuff that doesn't get on the radio you'd think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. although they have some lame-ass campy songs like "one week", "if i had $1000000", "be my yoko ono", and "another postcard" most of their songs are totally awesome. i think they are the first band since the beatles to have a high level of diversity in their music. give 'em a listen, and you'll find out that they are one of the greatest bands of all time.

Their song Brian Wilson is a great song as well as Straw Hat and Old Dirty Hank and The Old Apartment. They may well be the first band to ever sing about Akira Kurosawa in a song.

Well, when I say reminiscent of the Verve I mean they sound like the Verve in my opinion. So basically they're somewhat grungy but mostly alternative pop/rock. I'll admit I'm not too familiar with them because no one else seems to be. I'll see them in concert in a few days so I should have a better feel for what they're like. I recommend "Hold On" if you can find it. Sometimes I start playing that song on my guitar and switch to "The Drugs Don't Work" midway through.

I'd say for today, probably Wilco. They are considered by many in the music industry to be one the best bands around today, but for some reason can't seem to sell more than 300,000 to 500,000 of any of their albums. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one of the best releases of the milenium so far. Jeff Tweedy is one of the best American song writters since Dylan. His lyrics are incredible. It's too bad they never really play in front of crowds larger than 2000-3000 people, they deserve more.
