not world music in the usual sense, but...

MIA is a sri-lankan born refugee living in britain, and although her music seems influenced by modern pop and hip-hop it also brings in dancehall and tribal sounds, bhangra and grime. her album Arular is officially released next month, although you can get hold of it now through other means she's definitely worth checking out, you can listen to some clips on her website http://www.miauk.com/

I listened to Arular considering all the hype it got. This is the kind of music I dislike the most. Nelly Frutado deja vu.

I like mia alot. I saw her in buenos aires a couple of months ago and it was a great show...though i hear she is one of the worst offenders when it comes to lipsyncing and background tapes....still the show was rather entertaining...

Sorry, but there is no way in hell one could compare MIA to Nelly. It took a few listens before I got into it, and once I did, easily one of my top albums of 2005. I have since heard much criticism of her album, and I do not dispute anyone's dislike of it at all. But Nelly? No way, no how...

I listened to most of her album yesterday and I think it's ok, but only ok, I'm not that taken in by it. Her vocals tend to be a little irritating sometimes...
