The forum for talking about it, however, isn't.

Record labels have the power to make anything popular, even crap.

It's not just record labels, it's advertising in general. Most people don't realise how much they're affected by it. The video here shows it to great affect: http://www.channel4.com/entertainmen...uggestion.html

Not until you start paying attention, do you realise just how easily manipulated we are. When you start exploring new music, the majority of the mainstream music loses its appeal. Even then, the record labels have got their marketing machine at work. They create a sub-genre of alt-pop like REM, Athlete, Snow Patrol etc. These types of bands (while being perfectly listenable) are specifically targetted at those wishing to break away from the mainstream.

Is mainstream music getting any worse? I certainly find it hard to listen to, and lacking in any real atmosphere. There's a few songs that are OK on a night out, but I can't think of any I'd chose to listen to at home. There's many from the past that I do listen to, probably because I grew up with them; they bring back memories.

Yes, but who finances the promotion of an artist?

It is, of course, the record labels. However, that was not my point. I was simply showing how marketing manipulates us in all other industries too, even if we don't admit it, let alone realise it. The record companies seem to have perfected this more than many other industries. What we really need is for mainstream radio to start playing what they actually like, not what they're told.

The real question is...why do they promote crap?
Couldn't they actually promote good music and build a following for a band or artist..... would that not make them as much money?

For example, a year ago Justin Timberlake was called the "prince of pop"...and jsut a year later it is Usher that is the "prince of pop"..... the media in general just seems to jump on whatever is next and uses terms like prince of pop to give it some sort of legitimacy....

Millli Vanilli was ahead of their time....
