Forgotten Soul Artists

Name a soul/R&B artist whose name you don't hear too often, and list a couple of songs to check out.

I'll start with someone whose name doesn't regularily come up in conversations, but everyone knows some of his classics:

Bill Withers

Some songs you need to check out:

Lean On Me
Ain't No Sunshine
Grandma's Hands
Just The Two Of Us (duet with Grover Washington, Jr.)
Use Me
Harlem
Who Is He (And What Is He To You)?

I wouldnt say Sly and the Family Stone had been forgotten...

The Isley Brothers are underated, although again not really forgotten.

Tyrone Davis died last week. He was best known for the hits "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turn Back the Hands of Time." He was 66 years old.

Sam Cooke - if he were still alive I would be a Sam Cooke groupie.

Love these songs:
You Send Me
A Change is Gonna Come (Aaron Neville just did a remake of this)
Bring it on Home to Me
Touch the Hem of His Garment
Jesus Gave Me Water

The family is getting less and less thought about. I'm a fan and last I've heard was good ol' Sly is in Isolation any news from him?

Ive noticed. Kids these days really arent huge soul fans. So I'm sure most of my friends wouldnt recognize Sly and the Family Stone, even though he really is one of the last forgotten of them all. Jackie Wilson is great. Bill Withers, Jerry Butler. There are a lot. People dont seem to know a whole lot about curtis mayfield. he was pretty awesome. Soul on.

curtis indeed was awesome, incidentaly they just released an album of remixes, havent heard it but apparently it sucks
too bad there isn't a classic soul radio station (to balance out all the classic rock), maybe then more people would know about soul, r&b, funk, etc...

Bill Withers should be huge!! Anybody heard "I Can't Write Left Handed"? It's an awesome song. One of the most poignant war protests I've ever heard.

As for underrated soul artists, my vote goes to Bobby Womack.
Tunes-
Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out
California Dreamin' (Great Cover)
Girl You're Welcome (Stop On By)
