arovane tides...strange BOC coincidences

maybe i'm going crazy, but after listening to the song "eleventh!" by arovane on tides, i started to see way too many similarities to boards of canada's staple sounds. children laughing in the background, slow hip-hop beat, classic synth sounds...even a god damn sample that sounds like a distorted, "i love you".

question is, who's the influence and who's the the follower?

arovane has always been very vulnerable to external influences.

well, MHTRTC came out 3-4 yrs prior to "Tides", so who knows. I definitely know what you are talking about, but I'd choose "Tides" over any of BOC's output anyday. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love BOC, but I see more maturity in Uwe Zahn's work, for some reason.

i listen to alot of idm, well not as much for the past several months, but generally. and BOC has never been my cup of tea, really. arovane, while not entirely original, is the much more genuine of the two, at least in my opinion. if that makes any sense....

well, he's much more original than he's given credit for. If you listen to a lot of his old 12" that came out in 98-99, you'd see that a lot of people may have been influenced by his sound, and then afterwards, he possibly conformed to find his own type of sound. Anyway, just my opinion.

Yeah, his Icol Distortion 12" is really great. Much more complex, and I think much better produced than his later material.

it's "icol diston" but close enough

See, his icol diston material was put out on about 4 or 5 various 12", and then collectively put on a CD as one about 2001-2002. It's kind of funny because you have to know the history about the releases to understand Uwe's progression of styles. Most people think of Tides as being his "style", when only listening to that and not the previous ones such as the Icol Diston and Atol Scrap material. He was much darker and IDM'ish in those days, and then progressed into a more soothing, ambient type of music. He does this well on "lilies". Also, if you guys want to check something else out, if you can get your hands on some of his side project called Nedjev, do it. It's Arovane-esque, although there is a slight change in some of it. I believe you can find that on the Lux Nigra label, for which the artist Zorn is apart of. Good stuff.

Whatever, I was close. The CD release is the I.O., AMX, and Icol Diston 12"s put onto one disk.

I've heard of the Nedjev project. I'll probably get around to it eventually.
