The Dears
After reading some buzz on this band and seeing a video on MTV or something I actually ordered the album No Cities Lost. I live in the backwoods so I have to order music but thats neither here nor there, this is a very good album and I'd really like to know what you guys think of them.

Well I'm bad at describing them, but I play them in a mix of Arcade Fire, Hope of the States, and The Shins

The Dears are one of Canada's very best. theyre ften compared to Morrissey and The Smiths and rightly so. its no coincidence as Morrissey is The Dears' frontman/songwriter Murray Lightburn's chief musical/lyrical influence. The Dears recently got the opportunity to open for Morrissey for a few of his You Are The Quarry tour dates which is likely their career highlight so far.
The music is superb from the first to the last. early on other comparisons came with other brit-rockers Blur and Pulp as they initially had a more poppy sound to them- this can be heard on their compilation of early recordings, Nor The Dhalias. their debut record, The End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story, took a turn more towards the avante-garde. This great album was follwed by two EP's- Protect and the excellent Orchestral Pop Noir.
their greatest work to date is their most recent album, No Cities Left, which was originally released in Canada in 2003 but has only made it to the US and UK this past year. it actually made NME's top10 of 2004 despite its little media push.
theyve also recently released a live album which ihavnt heard but if it does justice to capturing their huge live shows then it should be great as well.
The Dears should hav a new album out sometime this year [ithink]. they played one new track when isaw them open for Moz in Toronto and it was amazing. im very much anticpating their next effort.
