How have Starsailor and S Club 7 got mentioned in a thread about Nick Drake (lol)
Hey Sammo I see you live in Wigan, I didn't realize there was anyone who lived there that liked decent music. Most wear tracksuits and listen to crappy dance music. (lol). I went to college there last year and live in Leigh....unfortunately.

Nick Drake is amazing...a genius if i may say. My favorite song has to be River Man if not only for the 5/4 time...the stuff he would come up with, the music, the guitar parts, and his beautiful voice -- it's all stunning and comforting at the same time
(forgive my bias...nick's gotten me through some rough nights)

Drake's one of my favourite artists...
He is, or was, amazing. His voice, his lyrics...
His music is so intimate and gentle, and yet so very somber and painful...
I wish there were more singers and song-writers like him today.

i suppose it depends what you mean by "like him". Certain elements (the strengths if you will) of his style are reflected in many modern artists. So when I said there was a few like him, its usually because something about them sounds like nick drake. Does that make sense?
For example, the slighty gruff, non-operatic voice of nick drake is *sort of* mirrored by badly drawn boy and lampchop. The sort of muted-ness (I can't think of a better word ATM) is found in bands like alfie, belle and sebastian, mojave 3 (and neil halstead on his own) and to a certain extent hayden.
Also a thing I like about nick drake is the acoustic guitar. A note from an acoustic set can be as powerful to me as a powerchord from a heav metal romp. I find this in drake's music, but also bands like kings of convenience.
The singer-songwriting thing is ace at the moment, but I'm not sure if you would think they were like nick drake. The best ones IMO are people like ed harcourt (love songs but with a twist) and tom mcrae (dark, brooding, frickin ace) purely for their lyrical content. Although I've only descovered her music recenty, beth orton reminds me of nick drake on songs like "this one's gonna bruise"

Those artists -
I couldn't find any of them in Kazaa.
Oh, well... It's just that there's something special about Drake..
When I listen to him it feels like he's in the room, looking at me and singing.. His music is really THAT special to me.
I wish I could meet him, just to tell him he hadn't failed to get through people.. :P
