Miles Davis

Been wanting to get into more traditional jazz, so I`ve bought and been listening to Sketches of Spain. I think it`s very nice, though it`s a bit of new terretory for me. Does someone else here listen to this type of Jazz? What`s your favorite from this man?

Cheers,
Haakon

i've got some old traditional jazz on vinyl (i raided my dad's collection last year hehe)... never really got into miles davis though... i like what i heard but it seems that anyone who listens to jazz is expected to consider him the greatest...

personally i REALLY like eric dolphy's stuff (flute/clarinet)... he played in charles mingus's sextet for a while... i've also got a live coltrane album (at the village vanguard) where he sits in on the first jam... his stuff is pretty off the wall but i like it... i'd say his 'last date' album is his best... recorded 3 weeks before he died in 1964

i also really like stan getz's stuff when i want to mellow out... the stuff i've got is more latin jazz samba stuff but i like it a lot...

Sketches of Spain was probably the worst Miles Davis album you could have bought if you were just starting out on tradtional Jazz. I own all the early Miles catolog, and i would have to say for someone just getting into him, this is the hardest to start on. But I'm sure you didnt know, and since it was one of his most acclaimed, naturally it would be one you would get first. If you want my opinion, get Kind of Blue first, then if you like that get The Birth of Cool, and Milestones. These will give you a better view of him. But dont buy any of his later stuff, and expect it to be the same. it is very different from his early work. And if by chance you like Miles, i HIGHLY recommend Thelonius Monk (Straight, No Chaser OR 'Round Midnight) and John Coltrane (Blue Train OR Soultrane) lemmie know what you think if you get any of it. There is alot of other stuff you can listen to, but these are great artists to start on.

Got my hands on Kind of Blue, and on first listen I agree that this is far more traditional. It`s a nice listen, very lax. I think Sketches is more interesting though, but I like both albums so I`ll check out your other suggestions at a later time (had problems finding the others in the shop though).

I also listened to Stan Getz, cafè Mantmartre I think, it got a summer mood to it (liked it), it`s freezing here so I left it in favour of Xploding Plastix (got my attention because of your recomendations here, thanks!) Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents which no less than blew me away not to mention it was made in the tiny country I live in and totally passed me by.

Cheers for now!

To clarify panbient, Animal chin is not an album, it`s the only track they produced a video for. Their album with animal chin is "A Livingroom Hush" which is re-released on Ninja Tune, the new album The Stix is also soon to be re-released on Ninja Tune (I would like to recommend "The Stix" if you want something new and special)

no biggie... i was thinking more in terms of 'the fix' being renamed for north american release due to copyright issues since that one wasn't listed...

I just borowed a Miles Davis Quintet recording from my library. Its from a series called Immortal Concerts I think. It's a recording of a concert from 1964.
I have to say that it took a while to get use to it and appreciate it but in the end, I started hearing everthing and it was really amazing.

Also, the drumming in these songs just rocks! I'm not a drummer myself but i have seen enough and understand enough to see that what that drummer (Tony Williams I think) was doing was masterful.
