is vocal jazz really jazz?

vocal jazz confuses me. i think its closer to normal pop, jsut with a backingband playing something like jazz. how much of it is improvised? i really only listen to ella fitzgerald, and i think she improvs once in a while, but it doesnt really seem like jazz to me.

what do you all think? vocals belong is jazz yes or no?

Is this some kind of trick question, which I just don't understand.

Have you really listened to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella, the 3 best and still ask?

I am just going to forget, that this thread even was started.

there are pure jazz vocalists

and there are crossover vocalists that sometimes get called jazz.

Crossover acts like Norah Jones, Diana Krall (other bad singers) I don't include in my definition of jazz.

However all the pure singers are fine with me, like Billie, Ella, Patty Waters and even vocal groups like Hendricks, Lambert and Ross.

Once again I lift my hind leg (like the dog that I am) before the holy altar of Jazz Geekdom and declare: Frank Sinatra...and Tony Bennett, too.
