I like Sufjan Stevens a lot, even if I'm not really a Christian anymore myself... He's a singer songwriter and has quite a few religious themes in his music...
Spain is more or less of the same genre and they have also a few really good songs...
EDIT: oh and 16 Horsepower of course, doomy appalachian folk with dark old testamental themes, really good...

Cool: Basically, the reason why i asked is because im in a band and our faith has everything to do with our lives, including music. I understand what you say about the preachyness of Christians. I wouldnt call our band a christian band because of the bad vibes it sends. But i would say i am a christian.
I guess at the end of the day, whats preaching, if we dont do what we say? It annoys me and i am one!

The only 'outward' christian band I like is P.O.D., and mainly their older stuff. Beyond that, I can't think of any that I would go out of my ay to listen to. This is not because I'm anti-christian (i'm rather indifferent when it comes to religion), just mostly because a lot of their musci doesn't appeal to me. What would your characterize your band like?

We dont know yet! sounds weird, but were deff. into rock. probably quite funky. We've been going for about 4 months and were just experimenting in lots of stuff. Were trying to bring out an e.p in summer.

The most talented Christian band was Holy Soldier. Not sure if they're still around, the original lineup I know for sure brokeup. If you can find their album Last Train, I think many may be pleasently surprised. They cover The Stones' 'Gimme Shelter', and it rocks. Not too preachy of a band, more of an intelligent undertone of Christianity. I like it, and The Zola ain't even Christian.
Any love for Stryper?

my only real experience with christian music was making the mistake of buying the 2nd ugly kid joe album 'menace to sobriety'. (i was 17 and i 'had' to choose a free album from the BMG booklet that month). somehow AMG gives it 4/5 stars WTF??? anyway songs like 'jesus rode a harley' and other biblical references thrown into their mix = a giant pile of lame shite.
i think a lot of it has to do with how the people approach the music both as listeners and performers. i don't have any problems with music that has indirect references to anything but direct references generally turn me off (regardless of religious/social/political bias). unfortunately it seems that a lot of christian music feels the need to be direct about that aspect of themselves. it's kind of like religious people, you have some truly devout people who choose to practice on their own and let you in when you show interest, and at the other end of the spectrum you've got the zealots bashing disbelievers on the head with their bibles.
