I'm goin to a metalfestival this summer where dream theatre is playing and you know what? I'll be in the back drinkin my beers, waiting for the next band.
I never liked them, they never seemd to be "great" to me. The music never touched me. Please don't start saying listen to this, or this... my brothers a huge fan, I had to listen, even if I didn't want to. (i'm the youngest).
Maybe it's just to complicated for me....

I've found Dream Theater is only for certain people. It's definitley something you have to be in a specific mindset to like.

I haven't heard much of dream theatre but my friend let me listen to one of their cd's once and it was absolutely amazing.. all instrumental stuff. If I ever get a chance I will purchase one of their cd's. Can any of you recommend a specific one that is especially good?

I haven't heard much of their earlier stuff, but I started out on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
I guess I'm sort of a poser-dream theater fan... Everyone seems to like Change of Season and Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory

I loved Metropolis Pt. 2. I liked it more than Six Degrees. Though Six Degrees has some beautiful tracks, but so far as the music is concerned, metropolis is much better (i reckon anyway)
Here's a thread about Dream Theatre albums if you're interested:

Oh you need recommendations? Listen to Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory, its one of the best concept albums out there. Their style is so original, you get some regular rock in there, some heavy riffs, and a lot of light rock too. Thats why I love them so much, they can release songs that can be played on light rock radio stations, and at the same time they released progressive metal albums that are insanely hard and fast

At first I thought that genesis was being sarcastic; Dream Theater is far from under-rated. They are probably the biggest prog. band at this point. Hey, even my friends who's otherwise listen to only stuff that has mtv exposure too know of them.

I think the reason is that they somehow got included in the classic metal bands(Metallica, Black Sabbath, Pantera...) that lots of people listen to at least once. However, I really don't understand how that is as they are from after the 90s.
But even not considering this(which might be a freak phenomenon among campuses) Dream Theater are the biggest prog. band currently active.
