Naked City's best recording Really depends on what you are looking for. My favorite is Grand Guignol – an album containing all of the tracks from their Torture Garden as well as the magnificent first track – Grand Guignol.
"This is John Zorn's tribute to Grand Guignol, a theater and a theatrical form that thrived in Paris in the early decades of the 20th century. It created a style that depended on realistic makeup and grotesque violence to depict murder, rape, mutilation, and torture, to the delighted horror of its audience. A decidedly low form of public entertainment, it enjoyed its greatest popularity at the same time that France was home to the creation of modernist culture and the subtle beauties of French impressionism in music. That's a cultural contradiction--or perhaps an entranceway--that Zorn walks right into and explores on this CD with Naked City, a band that includes guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Joey Baron, bassist Fred Frith, and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz--veterans of numerous projects in common--and the vocals of Yamatsuka Eye (of the acclaimed Boredoms). "
Grand Guignol includes all of the track from "Torture Garden", which is the straight-up Jazz-grind stuff, along with their self titled album and Radio.
On the other hand, if you are looking for something more ambient, like the first few tracks of Grand Guignol and the song Grand Guignol you are likely to enjoy the album "Absinthe". Finally, something in between by Naked City is "Leng Tch'e". That one is still metallic but on the doomy side of metal. To be perfectly honest with you, I would recommend just getting their complete recordings, as well as Painkiller's. It's just awesome.

Cheers Geryon, Grand Guignol will be top of my list then, but basically I'll buy anything I find.
I actually very nearly bought Painkiller's "Guts of a Virgin" a few months back, but for some reason put it back in the racks. Next time I went back to buy it, the shop had closed down. Just think, my money could have saevd the shop I brought me some bizarre music. Let that be a lesson to all spendthrifts out there...
